Dylan Lawlor Returns for Cardiff City as Pressure Builds
Cardiff City have their defensive lynchpin back just as the pressure starts to build.
Wales centre-back Dylan Lawlor is fit again and in contention for Cardiff’s home clash with Charlton Athletic on Saturday (12:30 BST), handing Brian Barry-Murphy a significant boost as the Bluebirds chase their first Championship win of the season.
Lawlor, 20, has not played in 2026-27 after suffering a knee injury, but returned to full training this week and has been cleared to feature.
“Dylan will definitely be available, he's good to go,” said Barry-Murphy, who has watched his side draw four and lose three of their opening seven league games.
The news is tempered slightly by a more cautious approach with fellow centre-back Will Fish. The former Manchester United defender is also back on the grass after hernia surgery, but Cardiff will hold him back.
“Will Fish won't be available, he's probably another week behind so we're not going to take any chances, but Dylan's back fully fit,” Barry-Murphy added.
Lawlor’s return comes after a relentless 2025-26 campaign in which he made 43 appearances for club and country. His injury saw him omitted from Wales’ Nations League squad on Tuesday, but at club level his re-emergence is timely.
The young defender rose quickly under Barry-Murphy, establishing himself at the heart of Cardiff’s back line during their League One campaign. Now the head coach must decide how bold to be with his selection against Charlton.
“He's trained really well. We'll see how he is today and tomorrow, then make a decision based on who we feel is best to start this game,” said Barry-Murphy. “But he's fully fit, with no issues with his knee whatsoever, and he looks great.”
Cardiff have been stretched at the back in recent weeks. Injuries forced them into a series of reshuffles, with full-backs Perry Ng and Joel Bagan pressed into central roles. Gabriel Osho has also missed games with his own fitness problems.
The club moved to ease that strain by bringing in Krystian Bielik from West Bromwich Albion, but the manager has been short of specialist centre-backs. That is why Lawlor’s availability – and Fish’s looming return – feels so significant.
“They're two such outstanding players and to give us that extra depth to our squad that we've lacked in the earliest parts of the season is going to be really important,” Barry-Murphy said. “I'm very pleased to get them back and will try to build them up gradually to make sure that they stay fit, and both players can be very important for us.”
Cardiff’s injury list is not clear yet. Wales internationals Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies remain sidelined, as does defender Calum Chambers.
Chambers is dealing with knee, neck and back issues and is due a further scan, while Colwill and Davies edge closer to returns from ankle and hamstring problems respectively.
“We expect them to train in the middle of the international break, Rubin and Isaak,” Barry-Murphy confirmed. “Calum Chambers is having a further scan on his injury this afternoon, so we'll know more on the timescale.”
Cardiff still wait for that first league win. With Lawlor back marshalling the defence and reinforcements on the horizon, Saturday against Charlton offers a chance to turn resilience into a result.
