Derby Young Guns Shine in 3-1 Victory Over Mansfield

Derby’s young guns stepped out of the shadows and took centre stage, as a mixed fringe and academy side saw off Mansfield Town 3-1 in a lively pre-season workout.

With the bulk of the senior squad earmarked for Burton Albion duty tomorrow, this was a chance for John Eustace to test depth and character. Both passed inspection.

Derby struck first. Lars-Jorgen Salvesen pulled wide, sized up his options and whipped in a superb cross. Dajaune Brown read it early, darted into the space and finished with the composure of a seasoned striker to put the Rams in front.

Mansfield, though, refused to play the supporting role.

Michael Smith, once on Derby’s radar, peeled away down the right and was slipped clear. He checked inside, shifted the ball onto his left and bent a precise strike beyond the reach of Josh Vickers, who could only watch it arc past his outstretched hand. The equaliser sharpened the tempo and the tackles.

Vickers had to be sharper still soon after, flinging himself to make a terrific save from the ever-dangerous David McGoldrick, who threatened to tilt the contest in Mansfield’s favour before half-time. Derby went in level, but not entirely comfortable.

Second Half

The second half opened with a warning. Smith, growing in confidence, rattled the crossbar from a corner, a reminder of the thin line between control and chaos in these pre-season tests.

That scare jolted Derby. Owen Eames surged out from the centre of midfield, driving through the heart of the pitch to release Salvesen. The Norwegian forward hit his effort cleanly but straight at goalkeeper Lewis, a let-off for Mansfield and a missed chance to swing the momentum.

The game had opened up now. Vickers, busy and assured, plunged low to his right to push away a fierce drive from McGoldrick from distance, another strong statement from the Derby keeper on a night when lapses would have been punished.

Then the youngsters seized it.

Charlie Smith picked up possession around 20 yards out, took a touch, and, with minimal fuss, threaded a lovely strike into the bottom corner. It was measured, controlled, and ruthless – the sort of finish that turns a pre-season outing into a personal marker.

You could feel more goals in the game, and Derby’s next wave made sure of it. Corey Blackett-Taylor, bright and direct, worked space down the flank and picked his moment. His build-up play carved open Mansfield’s back line and Cruz Allen arrived to apply the finishing touch, steering his effort past Harris to give Derby clear daylight.

A friendly on paper, yes. But for Brown, Smith, Allen and the rest of Derby’s emerging cast, this was something else: a timely reminder that places are there to be claimed, and that Eustace’s options run deeper than just the names on tomorrow’s team sheet.
