De Zerbi's First Pre-Season Friendly at Tottenham: £200m Rebuild Begins

Tottenham’s summer of hard running and heavy spending finally meets a ball and an opponent on Wednesday evening, as Roberto De Zerbi takes charge of his first pre-season friendly: a behind-closed-doors run-out against MK Dons at Hotspur Way.

No cameras. No crowd. But plenty at stake for those trying to catch the new manager’s eye.

De Zerbi’s first glimpse of his new Spurs

For two weeks, De Zerbi has had his players under the microscope at the training ground. Patterns, pressing, positioning – all on the training pitch. Now comes the first live test, the moment he starts to see who can actually carry his ideas into a game.

Tottenham have thrown more than £200million at reshaping this squad, with six new signings through the door. Two of them, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, are expected to feature in some capacity against MK Dons, offering a first hint of how they might fit into De Zerbi’s system.

Tonali, though, is unlikely to be overloaded. Work permit delays meant the Italian midfielder joined pre-season late, and his minutes will be managed as Spurs ease him into rhythm rather than risk him in the first friendly of July.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has also been in the thick of training and will be in De Zerbi’s thoughts, even if this first outing is likely to be more about sharing minutes than locking down roles.

World Cup absentees and a new face at left-back

Not everyone is back yet. Those who went deep into this summer’s World Cup are still on extended breaks and will sit this one out.

Pedro Porro, fresh from starting for Spain in their 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina in Sunday’s final, is resting. So too Cristian Romero and Marcos Senesi, both granted time off after their own World Cup campaigns.

One high-profile arrival did report this week. Scotland left-back Andy Robertson spent Tuesday at Hotspur Way for his first day as a Spurs player following his free transfer from Liverpool, a significant addition even if he is not expected to feature immediately in this low-key opener.

Djed Spence, who impressed as England finished third at the tournament, will also be missing as he recovers from his summer exertions.

Injury rehab and long roads back

Around the main group, a different kind of work continues. Several players are still on the long road back from serious injuries and will not be risked.

Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert, both recovering from anterior cruciate ligament damage, have been seen at the training ground but remain some distance from a return to competitive action. Their involvement is limited to rehabilitation, not match minutes.

Mohammed Kudus is in a similar position. The attacker is following an individual programme as he builds back from a serious quad injury, staying away from full-contact sessions as the medical staff take no chances.

The same careful approach applies to Dejan Kulusevski. The Swede did not play a single minute last season because of a persistent knee problem, and Spurs will not jeopardise his recovery in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

Young hopefuls step into the spotlight

If the senior core is disrupted by late returns and rehab plans, that only opens the door wider for the club’s younger faces.

Mikey Moore has been training with the first team and could be handed valuable minutes against MK Dons. His impressive loan spell at Rangers has not gone unnoticed, and De Zerbi is weighing up whether the highly rated youngster can carve out a place in his Premier League squad this season.

Wednesday’s game may not be televised, but it could carry real weight for Moore. The Italian coach has not yet decided if the forward stays or goes back out on loan, and live action against senior opposition will help shape that call.

Academy forward Jamie Donley is another who has caught the manager’s attention over the last couple of weeks. He has trained regularly with the first team and is said to have impressed De Zerbi, putting himself in contention for a role in this opening friendly.

Heavy rotation and an early blueprint

De Zerbi is expected to rotate heavily, using the fixture to give as many players as possible their first competitive minutes of pre-season. This is about conditioning, sharpness and early impressions, not a settled XI.

Even so, a loose framework is emerging. Standard Sport’s predicted line-up for the 5pm kick-off reads: Kinsky; Takai, Phillips, Davies, Udogie; Fernandes, Tonali; Yang, Donley, Tel; Solanke.

It is only a guess, but it underlines the theme of the day: new signings bedding in, academy prospects auditioning, senior pros feeling their way back.

The stands will be empty and the cameras absent, yet for De Zerbi and a clutch of players desperate to define their Spurs future, this quiet July evening at Hotspur Way could echo far into the season.
