Crystal Palace Face Manchester City Amid Transfer Concerns

Crystal Palace’s season has barely started and already the alarm bells are flickering. A poor opening away to Everton has raised questions, and now there’s the added distraction of transfer noise around one of their key attacking threats.

Ismaila Sarr has attracted interest from Liverpool, and that is exactly the kind of storyline Palace do not need as the window ticks towards its close. They simply cannot afford to watch their best players drift out of the door while the campaign is still finding its shape. Lose Sarr now and the mood around Selhurst Park changes from concern to outright anxiety.

Yet there is still a sense that this Palace side carry a punch. For all their issues, they look like a team with a goal in them, a team that can hurt opponents if they find any sort of rhythm in the final third.

City clunky, but ruthless enough

On the other side of the fixture, Manchester City arrive with three points already banked from Bournemouth, but it was not the smooth, metronomic City performance we’ve come to expect.

They deserved the win, no question, but there was a slightly awkward feel about them, not least with Marc Guehi operating in midfield. It was an experiment that will have raised an eyebrow or two, not least from Mateo Kovacic, who suddenly finds himself watching someone else patrol the area he was brought in to control.

City have also added the highly rated youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi, a signing for the present and the future. He will need time, though. Time to adjust to the pace, the demands, the weight of expectation that comes with every touch in this team.

This is not shaping up as a procession. Palace can make this uncomfortable, can drag City into a contest that feels tighter than the league table or the squads on paper might suggest. The champions are likely to be pushed, forced to find an extra gear rather than strolling through 90 minutes.

Haaland’s response

Then there is Erling Haaland. Goalless last weekend, which for him feels like a drought. That usually doesn’t last. When he misses out one week, he tends to respond with a vengeance the next.

City may not be at full fluency yet, but with Haaland prowling and Palace still trying to steady themselves after a shaky start and the Sarr uncertainty, the balance tilts towards the visitors.
