Philippe Coutinho Returns to Brazil to Join Neymar at Santos

Philippe Coutinho has completed an emotional return to Brazil, reuniting with former national team colleague Neymar at Santos for the rest of the season, the club confirmed on Monday.

The move brings together two of the defining Brazilian talents of their generation, though in a twist of timing they have never actually shared a club shirt before. They dazzled together for the Seleção, but their paths at Barcelona never crossed: Coutinho arrived from Liverpool in January 2018, months after Neymar had forced his world-record move to Paris St Germain in August 2017.

Now, the link-up finally happens back home.

Santos released a slick video to announce Coutinho’s arrival, capturing the midfielder walking into the dressing room before being greeted by Neymar. The forward, who grew up at the club and returned last year, wrapped his old Brazil teammate in a hug.

"If it's a dream, I don't want to wake up," Neymar told Coutinho in the clip, a line that instantly lit up Brazilian social media and underlined the sense of nostalgia around the deal.

For Coutinho, it marks another turn in a winding career. The 32-year-old spent five standout years at Liverpool, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most gifted playmakers before securing a big-money switch to Barcelona. He helped the Catalan side win two LaLiga titles, but never truly became the long-term heir they had imagined.

His international journey has stalled too. Coutinho last appeared for Brazil in March 2022, and after a spell in Europe he went back to his roots in 2024 with Vasco da Gama, the club where he first emerged as a teenager. That homecoming proved brief; he left Vasco in February this year.

Neymar, now 34, made his own high-profile return to Santos last year, closing a circle that began with his explosive rise as a skinny teenager in the famous white shirt. After Brazil’s World Cup exit in July, he announced his international retirement, drawing a line under a turbulent but prolific national team career.

Now the two meet at Vila Belmiro, not as the fearless youngsters who once carried Brazil’s hopes, but as seasoned stars with something still to say. How much they can still change the story of Santos’ season is about to be tested.
