Chelsea vs Real Sociedad: Pre-Season Friendly Preview

Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge this afternoon to close out their pre-season with a friendly that carries a little extra edge: Real Sociedad, and Xabi Alonso’s first home game in charge.

The tour of Australia and Asia was anything but smooth. Chelsea put away Western Sydney Wanderers and AC Milan, yet stumbled badly with back-to-back defeats to Tottenham and Juventus, then leaked three goals in a chaotic 3-3 draw with Johor Darul Ta'zim in Malaysia. Entertainment, yes. Convincing preparation, not quite.

Now the dress rehearsal moves to familiar turf. The Premier League kicks off next weekend, and this is the final chance to fine-tune in front of home supporters, to swap jet lag and experiments for something that looks like a starting XI.

All the World Cup stragglers are back at Cobham, giving Alonso a full squad to pick from. That alone changes the mood. So does the prospect of a handful of debuts. Morgan Rogers, Pep Chavarria, Jordan Henderson, Valentin Barco and Maxence Lacroix are all in line to feature for the first time in blue. Enzo Fernandez could also be involved after Manchester City failed to meet Friday’s deadline to lodge a bid.

Then there’s the subplot in the dugout. Alonso, a Chelsea favourite from his playing days, now walks out at Stamford Bridge as the man in charge, facing his old club Real Sociedad. Sentiment won’t soften the test. Sociedad are a week away from their LaLiga opener and already have English scalps on their summer record after beating Wolves and Aston Villa. They arrive in London chasing a clean sweep against Premier League opposition.

For Chelsea, the stakes are simple. End an uneven pre-season on a high, show signs of cohesion, and send a message that the real work starts now.
