Chelsea vs Leeds: Caicedo Missing as Alonso Prioritizes Caution

Moises Caicedo will not be there. That is the starting point for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds United on Wednesday night, and it shapes everything around Xabi Alonso’s selection.

The Ecuadorian midfielder has not shaken off the problem that has stalked his start to the season. He missed the opening two games, then lasted only 14 painful minutes against Brighton before coming off. He sat out the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal as well. Chelsea have heard the alarm bells and Alonso has decided he will not ignore them.

No gamble. No rush. No repeat of what he has already called “the same mistake”.

The club are at least reassured this is not a “longer-term” issue, but that offers little comfort for a knockout tie that demands intensity in midfield. Caicedo is out again, and he is not alone.

Marco Palestra will also miss the game. Jordan Henderson is still sidelined by the wrist injury he picked up at the World Cup. Emmanuel Emegha joins the list of absentees too. For a squad built to compete on multiple fronts, the early-season treatment room is already busier than Alonso would like.

Palestra on Hold, but Very Much in the Plans

Alonso did not hide his frustration at losing Palestra just as the new signing was building momentum, yet his message was calm and clear: Chelsea rate him, and they will wait.

“He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the Premier League,” Alonso said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”

The temptation with a fresh signing is always to hurry him back, especially when the schedule tightens. Alonso is resisting that. Early September, Carabao Cup, or not, he is drawing a line.

The priority is obvious. Chelsea’s league campaign and the visit of Hull City to Stamford Bridge on Saturday carry more weight than a midweek cup tie, however noisy the crowd and however sharp the rivalry with Leeds.

Rotation Coming, but Cup Taken Seriously

That does not mean Chelsea will toss this competition aside. It does mean the team sheet will look different.

Levi Colwill, left out against Arsenal because of a minor fitness concern, is ready again and available to start. At the back, he should come straight into the side, restoring some balance and composure.

Mike Penders is in line to start in goal, a chance to impress under the lights. On the flanks and in the full-back areas, Pep Chavarria and Valentin Barco are both pushing to come in, fresh legs for a game that could easily turn frantic.

The expected XI has a clear pattern: enough seniority to control the tie, enough rotation to protect key figures for the league.

Chelsea predicted XI vs Leeds United: Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto; Barco, Lavia, Chavarria; Rogers, Palmer, Welbeck.

It is a side that still carries quality in every line, even without Caicedo anchoring midfield or Palestra offering his energy between the lines.

Injury Picture and the Stakes at Stamford Bridge

The medical bulletin before kick-off is blunt:

Out: Moises Caicedo, Marco Palestra, Jordan Henderson, Emmanuel Emegha. Doubts: none.

Kick-off comes at 8pm BST on Wednesday, September 9 at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea expected to treat progression with respect rather than obsession. Alonso will rotate, but he will not throw kids to the fire. The message is balance: win the tie, keep the legs fresh, and avoid another name being added to that growing injury list.

The Carabao Cup will not define Chelsea’s season. How they manage nights like this, with key players missing and decisions to make, just might.
