Chelsea Target Jan Paul van Hecke Seeks Clarity on Future

Chelsea target Jan Paul van Hecke has put his future firmly on the table, admitting he wants “clarity” over his next move as Europe’s elite circle around Brighton’s ball-playing defender.

The 26-year-old has grown into one of the Premier League’s most assured centre-backs in possession, clocking up 131 appearances and four goals for Brighton and Hove Albion. With only 12 months left on his contract and an €81 million (£70m) valuation hanging over his head, the timing of his public stance is no accident.

Chelsea and Liverpool admire him. Tottenham Hotspur have already tried to prise him away. Brighton have already said no.

Van Hecke wants answers – after the World Cup

For now, Van Hecke is on World Cup duty, having started the Netherlands’ opening 2-2 draw with Japan on Sunday. Even in the middle of a global tournament, the transfer noise has followed him, and he chose to address it head-on.

“Of course, things are also happening and I know that myself too, but that’s not for now, that’s more after the World Cup,” he said, in comments carried by Sky Sports.

“I will then see where I play. I have also said very clearly that I would like to have clarity for myself before the World Cup.

“And I have that too, but then for now, for myself, it’s just clear, I just want to play the World Cup as well as possible. That clarity will probably come after the World Cup when I make that step, then it’s clear to everyone.”

The message is unmistakable. The decision is essentially made in his mind; the reveal will come once the Netherlands’ campaign ends.

Brighton dig in as bids arrive

Brighton, though, are not behaving like a club ready to cash in on a wantaway asset. Quite the opposite.

Tottenham have already tested their resolve and been rebuffed. Roberto De Zerbi’s former side have seen two offers rejected for Van Hecke, while Brighton themselves have had a bid turned down by Spurs for young defender Luka Vuskovic, underlining how tangled this particular defensive market has become.

Inside the Brighton boardroom, there is no sense of panic about Van Hecke’s contract running down. CEO Paul Barber made that crystal clear.

“Yes, we have rejected a bid from Tottenham over the last week or so, in fact, two bids,” Barber told talkSPORT. “From that point of view, it has to be right for us as well as the player.

“We have to be in a position to make the best trades to suit our model and also to make sure that we're supporting Fabian [Hurzeler], because he's got another big season ahead of him.”

Brighton’s stance is familiar by now: they sell on their terms, at their price, and only when the replacement plan is in place. Any club, Chelsea included, will have to pay full freight.

Chelsea’s left flank reshaped as Cucurella nears Madrid move

While Chelsea weigh up a move for Van Hecke on the right side of their defence, another piece of their back line is already halfway out the door.

Marc Cucurella is set to join Real Madrid, with The Athletic reporting an agreement at €60m (£51.8m). The Spaniard is poised to become Jose Mourinho’s third signing of the summer at the Bernabeu, following Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries.

For Chelsea, the fee represents a significant injection of funds and a clean break from a player who had already publicly questioned the club’s direction after Enzo Maresca’s sacking in January, months before Xabi Alonso’s appointment.

Speaking to The Athletic in March, Cucurella did not hide his frustration.

“The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us. These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision. To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season. You would give everyone, the players and the new manager, time to get ready, have a full pre-season…”

Those comments now read like the prelude to an exit. The move to Madrid will give him a fresh start and leave Chelsea with a sizeable sum to reshape their defence.

The question is obvious: will part of that Cucurella money be pushed across the table to Brighton for Van Hecke, or will another heavyweight move quicker for one of the Premier League’s most coveted centre-backs?
