Chelsea Initiates Talks for Atalanta's Ahanor

Chelsea have moved early in the race for Honest Ahanor, opening preliminary talks with Atalanta and the Italy defender’s representatives, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The London club’s interest comes after Atalanta already turned down a €34m bid from Brighton earlier in the summer, a firm signal from Bergamo that they will not let one of their most prized prospects go cheaply. Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli made that stance clear in July, stressing that the club are not prepared to sell any of their best or most promising players, Ahanor included.

Atalanta’s resolve is understandable. Ahanor is only 18, yet already a regular presence in Serie A. Signed from Genoa in 2025 for €16m, he has racked up 28 league appearances and forced his way into the Italy senior side, making his debut in June under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini.

On the pitch, his versatility is a major part of the attraction. Ahanor can operate as a left wing-back or tuck inside as a centre-back, particularly on the left of a three-man defence. That profile fits neatly with the kind of flexible back line Chelsea have been trying to build in recent windows.

The context in Bergamo has changed, too. Giuntoli is only just into his first season at Atalanta and has reunited with Maurizio Sarri, with whom he previously worked at Napoli. Together they are attempting to shape a competitive, progressive side around a core of high-ceiling talents – exactly the group Ahanor belongs to.

Chelsea know Atalanta’s negotiating style well. The two clubs have already done significant business this summer, with Marco Palestra swapping the Gewiss Stadium for Stamford Bridge in a €60m move. That deal showed Atalanta will sell at the right price.

The question now is whether Chelsea are prepared to find it for Ahanor.
