Chelsea Sign Marco Palestra from Atalanta
Chelsea have moved decisively to land one of Serie A’s most coveted full-backs, with Italy international Marco Palestra undergoing his medical in London ahead of a big-money switch from Atalanta.
The 22-year-old right-back flew into the capital on Monday, and by Tuesday the deal had accelerated to its final stage, with his camp ironing out the last contractual details while he completed medical tests.
Chelsea outmuscle Inter
Inter pushed hard for Palestra and thought they were in the race financially. Then Chelsea arrived.
The Premier League club blew their Italian rivals out of the water by doubling Inter’s proposed salary. Where Inter were prepared to offer around €2.5m per season, Chelsea have gone to €5m net per year, a figure that instantly shifted the balance of negotiations and underlined how determined they were to get this done.
Palestra is set to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for a seventh season, a commitment that ties his peak years to west London.
A major payday for Atalanta
The fee reflects that conviction. Exact numbers remain the subject of minor disagreement, but all reports point in the same direction: this is a heavyweight deal.
British transfer specialist Ben Jacobs has described the package as “in excess of €50m,” while Sky Sport Italia report a structure of €57m plus a further €3m in add-ons. However the final accounting is written, Atalanta are looking at a total that can reach €60m.
They have also secured a 10 per cent cut of any future sale, a clause that shows how highly they still rate Palestra’s long-term value. If Chelsea turn him into the finished article and sell him on, Bergamo will cash in again.
For Atalanta, it is another example of their model in motion: identify, develop, and then sell at the top of the market, all while keeping a stake in the player’s future.
A new right flank at Stamford Bridge
For Chelsea, this is about more than just numbers on a balance sheet. It is a statement on the kind of team they want to build.
Palestra brings energy, aggression and a modern full-back’s profile, comfortable pushing high and wide, yet hardened by Serie A’s tactical demands. A long contract, a prime-age defender, and a salary that puts him among the better-paid players in his position: the club clearly see him as a cornerstone, not a rotation piece.
Inter thought they had room to manoeuvre. Chelsea slammed that door shut. Now all that remains is the signature that will confirm another bold move in their ongoing rebuild.
