Chelsea close in on £16.3m deal for defender Pep Chavarria

Chelsea are closing in on another piece of Xabi Alonso’s rebuild, with a £16.3million deal for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria nearing completion, the Press Association understands.

The 28-year-old, a left-sided defender who featured in last season’s Conference League final run, is expected to arrive as direct competition for Jorrel Hato after Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. Talks are described as advanced, with confidence on all sides that an agreement will be finalised after a pursuit that has stretched through much of the summer.

Chavarria is not the typical late-twenties veteran. He has only four seasons of top-flight football behind him, having stepped up from Segunda Division side Real Zaragoza in 2022. Yet that blend of relative experience and late development fits neatly into the profile Chelsea have targeted under Alonso: players old enough to steady the dressing room but still hungry, still climbing.

Building with Experience

Alonso’s Chelsea are being built with older hands in key roles. Danny Welbeck, 35, arrived from Brighton to bolster the forward line, while 36-year-old Jordan Henderson joined on Monday after leaving Brentford, adding a seasoned voice in midfield. Chavarria would continue that shift away from the club’s recent obsession with raw, high-potential prospects and towards players ready to compete immediately.

He would also become the third defensive signing of a busy summer at Stamford Bridge. Right-sided full-back Marco Palestra came in from Atalanta in July, offering energy and width on the opposite flank. Maxence Lacroix’s move from Crystal Palace was confirmed last week, giving Alonso another option at centre-back as he reshapes a back line that looked fragile and uncertain during last season’s slump to 10th.

Goalkeeper Situation

One position Chelsea are not planning to touch is in goal. Despite repeated links with Porto’s Diogo Costa, there has been no contact between the clubs and no interest from Chelsea in pursuing the Portugal international, who started five games at the World Cup. Alonso is understood to be satisfied with his current group: last season’s first choice Robert Sanchez, deputy Filip Jorgensen and 21-year-old Belgian Mike Penders.

Departures and Strategy

While the manager adds, the club continue to trim. On Monday, Chelsea reached an agreement for Trevoh Chalobah to join Como, where former Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas is preparing to lead the Italian side into their first Champions League campaign. The deal includes an agreement between all parties and a sell-on clause that will see Chelsea receive a percentage of any future transfer fee.

Chalobah joins a growing list of departures that already features Cucurella, Tyrique George and Andrey Santos, as the club clear space and wages for a more targeted squad.

The strategic shift has been brewing since the end of last season’s dismal campaign. Finishing 10th forced the hierarchy to confront the flaws of a recruitment model built around stockpiling young, inexperienced talent. The response has been decisive. Chelsea broke their transfer record in July to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m, a statement of intent for the attack. Argentina international Valentin Barco arrived from Strasbourg on Sunday, further deepening Alonso’s options.

Now, with Chavarria likely to follow, the pattern is unmistakable. Chelsea are no longer just collecting prospects; they are assembling a squad designed to challenge. The question is no longer whether the policy has changed. It is how quickly this new, hardened version of Chelsea can turn expensive intent into a title race.
