Chelsea Secures Ahanor on Loan to Crystal Palace

Chelsea have secured a deal for teenage defender Ahanor – but Crystal Palace will be the club to benefit immediately.

The 18-year-old, who Standard Sport revealed last week had agreed personal terms with Chelsea and received permission to travel to London for a medical, will now spend the next stage of his development at Selhurst Park. Chelsea have opted to loan him out straight away, with Palace taking him on loan from Atalanta before he eventually links up with the Blues in the summer of 2027.

The arrangement is a complicated one on paper, but simple in intent: Chelsea lock down a highly rated young defender for the long term, Palace get a ready-made reinforcement for their back line, and Atalanta cash in on a rapidly rising asset.

There is another wrinkle. Chelsea have already sent one player across the capital to Palace this summer, with Axel Disasi joining the Eagles on a season-long loan that contains no option or obligation to buy. Ahanor will now follow him to south London, giving Palace a significant injection of defensive quality from Stamford Bridge’s orbit.

Ahanor arrives with serious pedigree for his age. A product of the Genoa academy, the teenager has already broken into the Italy senior setup, earning two caps this year after his debut earlier in the campaign. At club level he became a regular for Atalanta last season, making 28 Serie A appearances and stepping onto the Champions League stage for the first time in September.

For Palace, it is a coup: a full international with top-flight and European experience, still years away from his peak. For Chelsea, it is another example of a long-range recruitment strategy that stockpiles elite young talent and parks them in competitive environments.

Chelsea eye Camara as Enzo uncertainty grows

While Ahanor’s pathway is mapped out well into the future, Chelsea’s midfield looks far less settled in the here and now.

The club remain keen on Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and are actively exploring a move for the 22-year-old. His name has climbed higher on Chelsea’s list as Enzo Fernandez’s situation grows increasingly uncertain, with Manchester City circling.

Fernandez has now missed back-to-back Chelsea matches amid that interest, including the wild 4-3 win over Brighton at the weekend. Asked to explain the Argentine’s absence, manager Xabi Alonso pointed to the need for absolute focus inside the dressing room.

"We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game," Alonso said.

Chelsea are building for 2027 with Ahanor while wrestling with immediate questions over Fernandez and a possible move for Camara. The long-term plan is clear. The short-term midfield puzzle is anything but.
