Chelsea Reject Leeds' Loan Bid for Mudryk

Chelsea have turned down an opening season-long loan proposal from Leeds United for Mykhailo Mudryk, with the London club unimpressed by the terms of the offer but still locked in talks over the winger’s future.

The initial approach from Elland Road fell well below Chelsea’s expectations, yet negotiations remain alive. Mudryk, for his part, is understood to be keen on the move and has already agreed in principle to spend the campaign away from Stamford Bridge in an effort to rebuild his career and match sharpness.

The 25-year-old’s trajectory stalled dramatically after a positive test for the banned substance meldonium led to a 20‑month spell out of the game. His suspension ended in July, and since then he has been eased back into action on Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making several appearances from the bench as he tries to regain rhythm and confidence.

Despite interest from Strasbourg – Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo ownership structure – and from Serie A sides, Mudryk has made it clear in recent conversations that he wants to stay in the Premier League. That stance has shaped the market around him.

Leeds have surged to the front of the queue for one key reason: they are prepared to take Mudryk on loan without any option to buy. That suits Chelsea, who want his wages covered while keeping full control of his long-term future after paying Shakhtar Donetsk an initial £61m for him in 2023.

Daniel Farke’s side have already been busy this summer. Harry Wilson has arrived from Fulham to bolster the attack, Tarik Muharemovic has joined from Sassuolo to strengthen the centre of defence, James Trafford has come in from Manchester City to compete in goal, and Nico Elvedi has been signed from Borussia Monchengladbach for added experience at the back. Mudryk would add raw pace and direct threat to that rebuild.

Leeds had previously explored a deal for Chelsea striker Liam Delap, though that interest has cooled, leaving Mudryk as the primary focus of their conversations with Stamford Bridge.

Brentford remain in the background. The Bees tried to sign Mudryk several months before Chelsea beat them to his signature and still like the player, but their preference for a loan with an option to buy has clashed with Chelsea’s stance. The west London club’s desire to include a potential permanent clause has already seen their interest rebuffed.

Coventry City have also registered their admiration and are monitoring the situation, while a switch to Strasbourg continues to be discussed inside the BlueCo network. Chelsea are weighing up sending other players to the French club as well, with midfielder Dario Essugo among those being considered for a move.

For now, the most realistic outcome is Mudryk leaving Stamford Bridge on loan before the window closes. Keeping him in west London has not been completely dismissed, but inside the club it is viewed as an unlikely scenario. The next Leeds offer will tell Chelsea just how badly Elland Road wants to be the stage for his second act.
