Chelsea Reject Leeds' Opening Bid for Mudryk: Ongoing Talks

Chelsea have turned down an opening offer from Leeds United to take Mykhailo Mudryk on a season-long loan – but the door is very much still open.

The proposal, which did not include a purchase option, fell well short of Chelsea’s expectations on the financial side, yet negotiations are ongoing. Mudryk, for his part, is understood to be keen on the move to Elland Road as he looks for a fresh start and regular football.

The 25-year-old has already agreed in principle to spend the season away from Stamford Bridge to rebuild his match sharpness after a brutal spell on the sidelines. He missed 20 months of competitive action following a positive test for the banned substance meldonium, a ban that only ended in July.

Since then, Mudryk has been eased back in during Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making several appearances from the bench as he tries to piece his career back together.

Premier League stay the priority

Despite interest from abroad, Mudryk has made it clear in recent conversations that he wants to stay in the Premier League. That stance has put Leeds in a strong position, even with rival interest from Strasbourg – Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo ownership group – and sides in Italy.

Leeds have emerged as frontrunners because they are prepared to take him on loan without any option to buy. That suits Chelsea, who want to keep full control over Mudryk’s long-term future while also shifting his wages for the season.

Daniel Farke’s side have already been busy this summer, adding attacker Harry Wilson from Fulham, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City and defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach. A move for Chelsea striker Liam Delap had also been explored earlier in the window, but that interest has since cooled.

Brentford and Strasbourg still circling

Leeds are not alone in the chase. Brentford have tracked Mudryk for a long time and were viewed as a serious option again, but their hope of inserting a clause to make the deal permanent has proved a sticking point. Chelsea rejected that idea.

The Bees tried to land Mudryk months before Chelsea eventually signed him from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for an initial £61m and they remain admirers of the Ukraine international.

Coventry City have also registered an interest, while a switch to Strasbourg remains firmly on the table as Chelsea weigh up how best to use their French partner club. The London side are considering sending other players there too, including midfielder Dario Essugo.

For now, the most likely outcome points away from Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are expected to find Mudryk a loan home before the window closes, even if a surprise decision to keep him in Alonso’s squad has not been completely ruled out.
