Chelsea vs Real Sociedad: Alonso's Stamford Bridge Debut

Xabi Alonso walks out at Stamford Bridge for the first time today, and fate has handed him a familiar opponent. His Chelsea side close out pre-season against Real Sociedad, the club that raised him and then launched his coaching career.

The setting is friendly. The stakes are not.

This is the last rehearsal before the Premier League curtain goes up, and Alonso has decisions to make all over the pitch.

Debut watch at the Bridge

Morgan Rogers is expected to pull on a Chelsea shirt for the first time, the headline name in a cluster of potential first outings of the summer.

Alonso knows Sociedad inside out. He came through their academy, wore the shirt in La Liga and later took his first steps in the dugout with their B team in 2019. Now he has to out-think his boyhood club from the home technical area at Stamford Bridge, hoping to turn an arduous, globe-trotting pre-season into something that feels like momentum.

Chelsea’s tour of Australia and Asia delivered mixed performances and patchy results. The football has flickered without fully convincing. A strong display here, in front of home fans, would go a long way towards easing the noise around a bloated squad and an uncertain depth chart.

Enzo stance hardens as window ticks on

At least Alonso has numbers to choose from. Chelsea are back to a full complement, with their remaining post-World Cup absentees all back at Cobham in the last few days.

That includes Enzo Fernandez. The midfielder wants out and has been linked all summer with a move away, with Manchester City and Real Madrid circling. Chelsea, though, drew a line in the sand: any bids had to land by 5pm BST on Friday.

The club had set a £120million valuation and are refusing to entertain offers now that the deadline has passed. For Alonso, that brings clarity if not calm. Fernandez is here, at least for now, and the manager must decide how central he remains to the project with the season about to start.

Attack under the microscope

Up front, the picture is even more tangled.

Emmanuel Emegha, a summer signing, could finally feature after a hamstring problem kept him out of the demanding tour schedule. His return adds another body to an attacking unit already crying out for trimming.

Chelsea know the squad has to be cut down before the window shuts. For some, today is an audition in front of their new boss and a home crowd. Liam Delap, valued at £50m by the club, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu all fall into that bracket. All three strikers could yet leave before the deadline.

Alonso has already anointed Joao Pedro as his first-choice centre-forward, with Danny Welbeck pencilled in as support. The rest are playing for the right to stay in the room. A sharp 45 minutes here might change a career path; a quiet one could confirm an exit.

Defensive logjam

The uncertainty runs right through the spine.

Chelsea could lose as many as five centre-backs before the window closes in two weeks. Tosin Adarabioyo is drawing interest from several Premier League clubs and Benfica. Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile have long been viewed as expendable, with the club actively working on moves away.

Mamadou Sarr sits on the fence between present and future. He may yet remain with the first team, but Chelsea are open to a Premier League loan if the right opportunity appears. Aaron Anselmino was on a similar path before a hamstring injury in the final tour game against Johor Darul Ta'zim halted any immediate loan plans and looks set to keep him at the club for now.

All of which leaves Alonso with numbers, but not necessarily stability, as he picks a side to face Sociedad.
