Chelsea Secures Pre-Season Victory Against Bromley

Chelsea’s quiet workout behind closed doors carried a loud message.

Xabi Alonso’s side brushed aside League One Bromley 3-0 at Cobham on Thursday, a second straight pre-season win that keeps the new manager’s start spotless and his selection dilemmas growing.

Emegha strikes again – then worry

Emmanuel Emegha found the net for the second game running, continuing a seamless introduction to life at Chelsea after arriving from BlueCo sister club Strasbourg. Joao Pedro was on target as well, with Jamie Gittens again on the scoresheet to cap a confident attacking display.

For Emegha, it was exactly what he needed. With Joao Pedro the undisputed first-choice centre-forward, every minute, every touch, every finish matters. The Dutchman arrived with pedigree – 26 goals in 65 Ligue 1 appearances and the Strasbourg captaincy handed to him last July – and he has wasted no time showing why Chelsea moved early to secure him ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The momentum stalled, though. Emegha reportedly picked up a hamstring issue against Bromley, enough for Chelsea to leave him out of the initial 27-man squad flying to Australia on Friday. It is a jarring note so early in his Stamford Bridge story, just as he had begun to make a persuasive case for regular minutes under Alonso.

New arrival Geovany Quenda also stayed behind, understood to be nursing a minor problem that is not considered serious.

Gittens makes his case out wide

If Emegha’s start has been sharp, Gittens’ has been defiant.

After a difficult, injury-hit debut season at Chelsea, the winger has used these low-key friendlies to remind people what he can do in the final third. Another goal against Bromley, following his strike in the 3-1 win over Crawley last weekend, underlined his timing as competition for wide roles intensifies.

Alonso handed minutes to a clutch of teenagers – Landon Emenalo, Reggie Walsh, Reggie Watson among them – as Chelsea signed off at Cobham with another win before boarding the plane for their pre-season tour. Yet it was Gittens who again forced his way into the conversation, just when his future had started to look uncertain.

The battle out wide is growing crowded. Pedro Neto’s situation remains cloudy, and Chelsea’s interest in Bayer Leverkusen teenager Kerim Alajbegovic has only muddied the waters. Standard Sport understands that any serious move for Alajbegovic would likely push the club towards a decision on either Neto or Gittens – with a permanent sale or a loan exit for Gittens both on the table.

Gittens’ response has been simple: perform. With Rogers currently on an extended break after the World Cup with England, the former Borussia Dortmund youngster has seized the extra space in the pecking order to stake his claim directly in front of Alonso.

Decisions looming in attack

Chelsea are not actively touting Neto around and have no immediate plans to offload the Portugal winger, who is also resting after his World Cup exertions. Yet the club would listen to serious offers, a stance that keeps the door ajar for change in the attacking unit before the window closes.

For now, Alonso has what every new manager wants in July: momentum and competition. Two wins from two, goals shared around, youngsters blooded, a clear focal point in Joao Pedro and a hungry understudy in Emegha, injury permitting.

Behind closed doors at Cobham, the season’s attacking hierarchy is already being argued out. The next question is simple: who will still be standing in that fight when the plane from Australia touches back down?
