The Ukraine winger, 25, has been a conspicuous absentee, his absence hanging over the early friendlies. That cloud has lifted. Mudryk stepped off the plane in Hong Kong as one of several fresh faces reporting for duty, a timely boost after the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham.

He is not alone. Geovany Quenda, the £40m winger signed from Sporting, has joined the group and will be under immediate scrutiny. Big fee, big expectations, and a manager who will not wait long to see if he can handle the pace of Chelsea’s wide areas.

Behind them, another battle is quietly taking shape. Goalkeeper Mike Penders has also linked up with the squad, walking straight into what Alonso has hinted will be an open contest for the number-one shirt with Robert Sanchez. The squad in Hong Kong has swelled again with the late arrivals of Moises Caicedo and Nicolas Jackson.
