Chelsea's Interest in Manu Koné Persists Despite Summer Setback

Chelsea’s window may be shut. Their interest in Manu Koné isn’t.

The French midfielder spent deadline day at the centre of a tug-of-war, with Chelsea pushing late to take him to London and Roma digging in to keep him. Talks were opened between the clubs, the outlines of a deal explored, and for a few hours Koné looked like one of the market’s final big moves.

Then Gian Piero Gasperini stepped in.

The Roma manager made his stance clear: Koné was not leaving. He views the 23-year-old as a key part of his project, an anchor he is not prepared to lose midway through building a side in his image. That internal veto proved decisive, and the proposed switch to the Premier League collapsed before the clock ran out.

The story has not gone quiet, though. Far from it.

In France, Sport.FR report that Chelsea’s pursuit is ongoing and that the club is already considering a renewed push in the winter window. The failed summer attempt has not cooled their admiration or their need for a midfielder with Koné’s profile.

So the situation is set. Koné remains at Roma, Gasperini has his man for now, and Trigoria has won the first battle.

January, though, is coming. And Chelsea look ready to knock on that door again.
