Chelsea Eye Late Move for Marcus Rashford

Chelsea are weighing up a late-window move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford in what would be one of the most eye-catching deals of the summer, according to reports.

The London club have already ripped up the market once. More than £300m has gone on new faces, with Morgan Rogers becoming the most expensive British player in history. Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Valentin Barco have followed through the door, while Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson have added experience and scars from years at the top.

Xabi Alonso’s reign started with a jolt of adrenaline on Monday night, a wild 3-2 win over west London neighbours Fulham that hinted at chaos and promise in equal measure. But behind the touchline celebrations, the calculator is out.

Squad Trimming

Chelsea’s hierarchy are now concentrating on trimming the squad. Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap are both expected to be sold, and the club are open to offers for Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto. Enzo Fernandez, constantly linked with Manchester City, will not be allowed to leave on the cheap; Chelsea want at least £120m for the World Cup-winning midfielder.

Even with all that movement, the recruitment drive is not finished. The club are open to signing another versatile attacker before the window shuts next week, and that is where Rashford comes in. The Independent report that Chelsea are considering a late push for the England international.

Rashford's Situation

Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he tried to turn a temporary stay into a permanent switch to the Nou Camp. The deal never materialised and he returned to Old Trafford, his future once again under the microscope.

United were initially thought to be ready to cash in, but Michael Carrick publicly cooled that talk in pre-season. Speaking to ITV1, the United manager was clear.

“He’s our player, you know, and he’s come back great. He’s just like any other player,” Carrick said. “I’ve known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back.

“He’s been back two or three days training and it’s just pretty normal, to be honest. And we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”

Rashford came off the bench at half-time in United’s Premier League opener at Hull City on Saturday, but could not prevent a shock 2-0 defeat for Carrick’s side. It was a flat start to a campaign that could define his next move.

The forward has already lived one footballing lifetime at Old Trafford. More than 400 appearances for his boyhood club in a decade, a World Cup with England, the pressure and expectation that comes with being the face of United’s attack.

Now, at 28 and approaching 29, the next decision matters.

Potential Move to Chelsea

Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend believes Stamford Bridge could be exactly the reset Rashford needs, especially after the club allowed Alejandro Garnacho to join Aston Villa on loan.

“I think Marcus Rashford improves Chelsea’s squad, he is an improvement on Alejandro Garnacho, that’s for sure,” Townsend told CasinoHawks.

“The number we were talking about was £35m. I’m very surprised that no one has come to get him for that money, even if he’s 28.

“Wide strikers are asked to produce a lot of output nowadays, and there aren’t many operating in the top flight at thirty-two or thirty-three. So these next couple of years for Marcus are big. It has to be the right move.”

The sticking point is obvious: wages.

“He’s on massive wages, which is an issue for any club, but you’d think he could get that to a level everyone finds acceptable. A club like Chelsea might suit him,” Townsend said. “I could see that. I like Pedro Neto, but he sometimes flatters to deceive. Garnacho is far too inconsistent, like Jadon Sancho, those sorts of players are difficult to accommodate.

“Rashford showed at Barcelona that he can play at a big club, he understands that mentality.

“At £35m, I’d be surprised if a deal doesn’t get done, depending on his salary demands. If he wants to stick on £300,000-a-week, then he’s going to have a problem.

“But there’s no point in going back to Manchester United and not playing at his age. That doesn’t send a great image to potential suitors if he’s happy to just sit on the bench.

“Marcus and his team should be working around the clock to find the right environment for him at the right level, wage-wise. You want to play.

“At nearly 29, he’s in his peak, and he needs to be out there more often than not.”

Chelsea are hunting one more attacker. United are reeling from an opening-day defeat. Rashford is staring at the prime years of his career.
