Casper de Norre Injury Concerns for Millwall After Wrexham Defeat

Alex Neil fears the worst for key midfielder Casper de Norre after the Belgian limped out of Millwall’s defeat at Wrexham – and admits the loss was the moment the game slipped away.

De Norre, 29, pulled up shortly before half-time in Wednesday night’s Championship clash with the score at 1-0. Without him, Millwall unravelled and Wrexham ran out 3-0 winners.

“I thought the big turning point was when we lost Casper,” Neil told BBC Radio London, cutting straight to the heart of it.

The diagnosis does not sound encouraging.

“It’s not good. Senior players know their bodies and he’s definitely felt a pop of some kind.”

From there, Neil was forced into a reshuffle he never wanted. De Norre came off, but the planned replacement, Derek Mazou-Sacko, was nowhere near ready for a full shift.

“He was probably due to get about 20 minutes,” Neil explained. That is why Camiel Neghli was thrown on first, with Mazou-Sacko only introduced later.

The knock-on effect was brutal. The middle of the pitch, already patched up, began to fray. The two young midfielders, Daniel Kelly and Jenson Metcalfe, started to cramp. Up front, Josh Coburn struggled with a heel problem.

The bench kept moving. The cohesion disappeared.

“We ended up having to make wholesale changes, and the difficulty you’ve got with that is that the understanding throughout the players on the pitch is diluted,” Neil said.

Against a seasoned Wrexham side, that lack of rhythm was punished.

“When you come up against an experienced team like Wrexham, it makes it a difficult task.”

This is not just about one bad night. Neil laid bare the scale of Millwall’s problems.

“It’s frustrating because we’re probably down to our last third of the squad in terms of trying to get a team on the pitch and trying to be competitive at the level.”

The fixture list does not ease up, but there is at least a sliver of good news. Neil expects to have Tairyk Arconte and Kyrell Lisbie back in contention for Saturday’s game against Bolton, and Romain Esse could also feature after his return from Crystal Palace.

“We’ll see where he is, if he’s available and ready,” Neil said of Esse. “I don’t think he’s done loads over the pre-season so we need to be careful.”

Millwall now wait on the scan results for De Norre. With the squad already stretched to its limits, the verdict on their midfield anchor could shape the early course of their season.
