Michael Carrick Discusses Transfer Strategy for Rashford and Zirkzee

Michael Carrick is just about the last man you would expect to start holding court on transfer strategy.

The Manchester United head coach is famously guarded on that front, but the questions are coming anyway. They will circle around Joshua Zirkzee, wanted by Serie A side Fiorentina, and Marcus Rashford, whose name has reappeared in reports linking him with Fenerbahce.

Rashford’s situation, though, has barely shifted. For the past month, the consistent message from all sides has been the same: he is expected to stay at United this season. That remains the case now.

His performance at Hull City only strengthened that stance. Introduced at half-time in last week’s defeat, Rashford was one of United’s brighter players, injecting some urgency and threat into a flat display. On that evidence, he has a genuine chance of returning to the starting XI when Ipswich visit Old Trafford on Sunday.

Zirkzee’s future feels less settled. Interest from Italy has been bubbling all summer and Fiorentina have now stepped forward with a proposal built around a loan. That does not line up neatly with United’s preference. The club would rather a permanent sale, or at the very least a loan deal that includes an obligation to buy.

The question now is whether Fiorentina push harder or one of the other Italian suitors finally turns admiration into a concrete offer.

Carrick will face the cameras on Friday, and whether he likes it or not, Rashford and Zirkzee will be at the heart of the conversation.
