Carrick's Commitment to Keeping Fernandes at Manchester United

Michael Carrick is not getting drawn into contract politics, but his message on Bruno Fernandes is unmistakable: Manchester United’s captain remains central to his plans.

Fernandes, 31, has entered the final year of his current deal at Old Trafford. United hold an option to extend it by a further 12 months, yet a £57m release clause hangs over the situation and has alerted some of Europe’s heavyweights. Juventus and AC Milan are weighing up a move, with Galatasaray also considering whether to test United’s resolve.

Ideally, United would tie their skipper down on fresh terms. So far, there has been no breakthrough and no sign of imminent progress. The noise around his future is growing; the club’s stance in public is not.

Carrick, speaking in Maynooth on Thursday, chose not to wade into the contract stand-off. He sidestepped the details, but not the significance of his captain.

“Listen, we want top players,” he said. “Every good team has players that have made a major impact. That's how it is.

“Bruno has had that for a period of time here. We want to keep pushing and want to get the best out of Bruno and the team around him.”

The numbers on the contract may be complicated. The role in the dressing room is not.

Fernandes has long been United’s creative heartbeat, but Carrick’s admiration stretches beyond his output on matchdays. Around Carrington and on tour, the Portugal international has become a reference point for younger players, a sounding board as much as a talisman.

“He's been so positive since I came back,” Carrick said. “As much as the performances, it's how he has been around the group, how he leads and takes time to help others, especially the younger players. That comes into play.

“He's in a really good place and looking forward to the season.”

So the situation is clear. While Europe’s suitors study the fine print of a £57m clause, Carrick is focused on something far more immediate: squeezing every last drop from a captain he believes can still define United’s season.
