Carrick’s First Derby of the Season: Questions and Scars

Old Trafford will crackle on Sunday. First derby of the Premier League season, Manchester United against an unbeaten Manchester City, 4:30pm kick-off, and Michael Carrick walks into it with a squad patched together and a story looping back on itself.

This fixture helped launch his rise to the permanent head‑coach job. Eight months on, he returns to it with pressure, expectation and a growing injury list.

United come into the game from a week that showed both sides of them. A ruthless 4-0 win over Sabah in the Champions League. A 2-2 draw at Everton that felt like two points dropped. The performance levels have flickered rather than burned.

City, by contrast, look familiar: controlled, relentless, efficient. A 2-0 win over FC Porto in Europe, then a 1-0 victory against Coventry City at the Etihad. They have not lost this season. They rarely look like doing so.

Shaw Managed, De Ligt Delayed

Carrick’s main concern sits at left-back. Luke Shaw has been leaned on heavily again, despite a history of injuries that would usually trigger caution, not dependency.

The 31‑year‑old was given an extra recovery day on Thursday, prompting doubts over his involvement.

“We just gave him an extra recovery day today,” Carrick said. “We’ll see by tomorrow [Friday] how he is, but it’s not an ongoing thing or part of a plan.

“It was simply off the back of the game the other day. Each individual has different little things we manage, and Luke was one of them today.”

United’s medical whiteboard is busy. Marcus Rashford, who went off early against Everton, trained on Wednesday and was fit enough to sit on the bench against Sabah, unused but available. His pace and direct running remain vital weapons in games like this, especially if United spend long stretches without the ball.

The bigger issue lies at centre-back. Matthijs de Ligt was again absent, joining Amad, Manuel Ugarte, Tom Heaton and Carlos Baleba on the sidelines.

De Ligt has not played since late November. Back surgery in May reset his season before it even started, and United are in no rush to gamble now.

“It’s positive. Matta has trained really well,” Carrick said. “When you’re out for such a long period and you get to the final stages, you push and push, and you’ve got to manage that last step. It’s important.

“We’ve got to get that balance right. He’s on a good track, in a good place, and it’s great to have him back around us – hopefully it’ll be sometime soon.”

Soon will not be Sunday. Against a City side that drag defenders into awkward spaces and punish any hesitation, that matters.

City Near Full Strength – With One Notable Exception

On the other side of town, the picture looks clearer.

City expect Nico O’Reilly to return after he pulled out of the warm‑up before the Coventry game last weekend. The midfielder is now “100% available”, a timely boost as the schedule begins to bite.

That leaves Jeremy Doku as their only absentee.

Doku has not featured since the Community Shield, when he felt tightness in his calf during the first half against Arsenal. The problem was not classified as serious, but it has already ruled him out of City’s first four matches of the season, with Enzo Maresca insisting the winger “needs more days”.

City have coped without his direct running and one‑v‑one chaos. They usually do. But his absence removes one of their most explosive options on the break, a detail that could shape how United dare to set their defensive line.

A Derby That Tests More Than Form

Strip it back and the story is simple: City arrive unbeaten and almost fully loaded; United are still searching for rhythm and juggling fitness.

Yet derbies rarely follow the script.

For Carrick, this is more than just another league game. It is a measuring stick of how far his United have come since that earlier derby turned him from stop‑gap to solution. Against a City side that still sets the standard, we are about to find out how much of that promise has truly taken root.
