Four years waiting for a performance like this. Carbery Rangers chose a west Cork derby under pressure to produce it.

Under the lights at the Black Field in Union Hall, with both sides stung by opening-round defeats, this had the feel of a crossroads evening. For a while, it was tight, tense, edgy. Then Ross caught fire and never looked back.

Ross take control

O’Donovan Rossa – Skibb to everyone in these parts – actually settled faster. By the 11th minute they led 0-3 to 0-2, Dylan Hourihane Snr clipping over a two-point score to nudge them in front and inject a bit of belief.

That belief vanished almost instantly.

From the next attack, John Hodnett and Peadar O’Rourke sliced through the Skibb cover to tee up Dylan O’Neill. Derek Tobin got something on the shot, Seán Fitzgerald scrambled, but the ball still crossed the line. Ross had their goal, and with it a foothold.

Skibb punched back. Colm O’Driscoll and Niall Daly built the move, Hourihane Snr launched towards David Shannon, and when the full-forward broke it, Dylan Hourihane Jnr reacted sharply to bury it. Suddenly it was 1-3 to 1-2 for Skibb on 13 minutes.

That was as good as it got for them.

They would not score again before half-time. Ross, by contrast, went on a 11-point tear that effectively killed the contest before the break – and they did it playing into the breeze.

O’Neill and Hayes run riot

Once Carbery Rangers found their rhythm, they were irresistible. John O’Rourke, operating deep in the half-back line, dictated the tempo with that familiar range of passing. On the opposite wing, Brian Hodnett drove hard, while further up the pitch Mark Hodnett constantly offered himself as an outlet at centre-forward.

Inside, O’Neill and Darragh Hayes feasted.

O’Neill finished with 1-6 from play, a superb return in any company. Hayes kicked five, only one from a placed ball, as Ross repeatedly worked the ball through Skibb’s massed defence and picked them off. Even when Peadar O’Rourke, excellent throughout, flashed a goal chance wide, it barely checked the momentum.

By the time the whistle went for half-time, Ross had landed the last 11 points of the half and turned a one-point deficit into a 1-13 to 1-3 lead. Ten clear, full of running, and in complete control.

No way back for Skibb

Any hope of a Skibb revival needed an early second-half surge. Instead, Ross struck first again. O’Neill, fed by the ever-industrious Patrick Hurley, tacked on another point to stretch the gap to 11.

O’Donovan Rossa were stuck on that 1-3 tally for a full 23 minutes either side of the break before Hourihane Snr finally ended the drought with a pair of frees. Even then, the Ross defence refused to cough up the kind of goal chance that might have sparked real jeopardy. They were tight, organised, and ruthless in contact.

When Hayes slipped a pass to Mark Hodnett for a two-point score and then tagged on his own fifth of the evening, the lead swelled to 12 as the game moved towards the three-quarter mark. The contest was effectively done; only the margin and the scoring difference remained in question.

Ross might have had a second goal late on, too. Mark Hodnett’s dipping effort forced Tobin into a sharp save, the Skibb goalkeeper clawing the ball away to prevent further damage.

Late sting, but Ross march on

Skibb did at least finish with a flicker. A mini-flurry of scores was capped when Hourihane Snr rattled the net from a free, trimming the deficit and softening the look of the scoreboard at 1-21 to 2-9.

Even so, the numbers tell the story. Carbery Rangers, chasing their first group-stage win since they beat Éire Óg at premier senior level in 2022, delivered it in style and with authority. The only lingering concern will be whether that late concession of 1-1 has any impact on scoring difference when the group table is finally settled.

For now, though, Ross head into a pivotal clash with Newmarket with confidence restored and their season very much alive. Skibb face a very different reality: they must regroup quickly and take something from Cill na Martra or risk being dragged into a second successive relegation play-off.

On a night when one west Cork club rediscovered itself, another was left staring hard at the weeks ahead.
