Calvin Ramsay Ready to Rebuild at St Mirren After Liverpool Loan

Calvin Ramsay says he is ready to “rebuild myself” at St Mirren after sealing a season-long loan move from Liverpool, a deal that feels as much about redemption as it does about opportunity.

The 23-year-old arrives in Paisley still carrying the weight of expectation that followed his £4.1m switch from Aberdeen to Anfield four years ago, a transfer that was supposed to launch him into the elite. Instead, his Liverpool story has stalled at just four first-team appearances.

Since then, his career has been pieced together in short bursts. Loan spells at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock have brought 26 more senior games, flashes of his talent rather than a sustained run. Now he wants something different: a full season, a clear role, a platform.

“I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again,” Ramsay said, laying out his motivation with little disguise. “I feel like it's a good place to come. I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me.”

He speaks like a player who has done the soul-searching already. No grand promises, just a clear sense that this year matters.

Ramsay believes the St Mirren he joins now is a better fit for his game than the side he has watched from afar in recent seasons.

“It's probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That'll suit me,” he explained. “I'm comfortable on the ball, I'm composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen.”

That attacking intent is exactly what manager Craig McLeish wants from his new full-back. For him, this is a signing that can shift the feel of his squad.

McLeish described Ramsay as “exceptional” and stressed the significance of the season ahead for a player whose solitary Scotland cap came in 2022 and has not yet been followed up.

“It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group,” the manager said.

St Mirren get a modern right-back who wants the ball and wants responsibility. Ramsay gets something rarer: a clean slate in a league he knows, with the clock very much ticking on a talent that was once tipped to explode.
