Brian Farinas: From Departure to Key Player at Barcelona

Brian Farinas was halfway out of the Camp Nou door not so long ago. Girona had a place ready for him, a fee on the table and a clear role in mind. It looked done in everything but the signatures.

Now he is staying put.

From exit list to pre-season revelation

As reported by Matteo Moretto, Barcelona have reversed course and decided that Farinas will remain at the club this summer, with both sides already working on a contract renewal.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who even wore the armband for Barça Atletic at times last season, had been close to a permanent switch to Estadi Montilivi earlier in the window. Girona, relegated from La Liga last season, were willing to pay around €1.5 million for 50% of his economic rights – a classic shared-bet operation on a La Masia talent.

For a while, that seemed his future. A step down in division, a step up in responsibility.

Then Frenkie de Jong went down injured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and everything changed.

Once it became clear the Netherlands international would be out for a lengthy spell, Hansi Flick redrew his plans. Instead of green-lighting Farinas’ departure, the German coach chose to keep him close, test him across pre-season and judge him at first hand.

Farinas has taken those chances. Regular minutes under Flick through the summer have turned into something more valuable: trust.

His performances have convinced Barcelona to hold onto him and, crucially, to open the exit door for someone else. Tommy Marques, who made his first-team debut last season, is now the midfielder set to leave.

La Masia product now part of the project

Farinas has been part of La Masia for eight years, arriving from Villarreal back in 2018. He is not a new face at the training ground; he is a slow-burn project now approaching a decisive stage.

His current deal runs until 2028, but with the club opting to keep him, talks over an improved contract are already underway, according to Moretto. Barcelona want to protect their asset and reward his progress.

Last season for Barça Atletic, the midfielder produced five goals and seven assists in 33 appearances – solid numbers for a player still learning the tempo and demands of senior football.

A few weeks ago, those stats were a sales pitch for Girona. Now they are part of the argument for why he belongs in Flick’s squad.
