Manchester United have been dragged into one of the summer’s most volatile transfer battles – but the chase for Bradley Barcola is already starting to look like a test of nerve as much as money.

Liverpool want him. Badly. They see the Paris Saint-Germain winger as a headline answer to the Mohamed Salah-sized hole on their right flank, a position that has defined an era at Anfield and now demands a worthy successor.

PSG, though, are playing a very different game.

PSG open the auction – and name their price

In France, the story being briefed is simple enough: PSG are ready to let Barcola go, and they’ve invited Europe’s elite to the table. RMC Sport report that Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona have all been told they are welcome to bid. The suggested starting point: €70m (£59.5m, $80m).

That figure is already hefty for a 23-year-old who has struggled for consistent minutes in Paris. It is also, according to information relayed to TEAMtalk, wildly optimistic from a buying club’s point of view.

Behind the scenes, PSG’s stance is far more aggressive. Club sources indicate that, despite Barcola’s frustration at his limited role and his slide down Luis Enrique’s pecking order behind Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue, the French champions will not wave him out of the door at anything close to €70m.

They value him at more than double that.

Internal guidance points to a demand of around €150m (£127.5m, $171m) to even consider a sale. That figure is framed against what PSG view as “English market” inflation this summer and underlines a key truth: for all the noise about an auction, Paris are not behaving like a club desperate to sell.

Publicly, they still insist Barcola is not for sale at all.

A restless winger and a ticking contract

The player’s situation tells a different story. Barcola has already expressed his concerns directly to Enrique over his shrinking role at the club. He wants to play, not watch. With Maghnes Akliouche poised to arrive and talks ongoing over a deal for Yan Diomande – another winger previously high on Liverpool’s list – the path to regular football at the Parc des Princes is narrowing fast.

His contract has under two years left to run. He has so far refused to sign a new deal. That combination – dwindling minutes and a ticking contract – is precisely what turns a “not for sale” asset into a very real market opportunity.

Agents and intermediaries have been busy. Barcola’s representatives have held talks with several of Europe’s biggest clubs in recent weeks, testing the waters and outlining the financial demands. PSG, for their part, are understood to be open to offloading players to stay on the right side of financial regulations. Barcola has made it clear he is ready to be one of those exits if it means regular first-team football.

The pressure is building on both sides.

Liverpool’s clear line – and Barcola’s preference

Liverpool’s interest is not new. Barcola has been on their radar for some time and, inside the club, there is a calm conviction that he fits the profile they want: young, high ceiling, capable of playing wide and attacking aggressively in one-on-one situations.

Crucially, he is understood to be particularly keen on a move to Anfield. Personal terms are not expected to be a major obstacle if Liverpool can find a breakthrough with PSG. Reports in England on Sunday even suggested an opening bid had already gone in.

The message from Liverpool’s side is measured. Club insiders are relaxed, confident they will add further quality before the window shuts, and see Barcola as a serious – but not solitary – option. Former defender Stephen Warnock has already argued that the winger is one of three major signings new manager Andoni Iraola should insist on this summer.

Barcola is not the only PSG player being linked with a reunion with Iraola, either. The new Liverpool boss is credited with an admiration for another powerful PSG star, with suggestions that a deal would “make sense” for both sides. It underlines how heavily the French champions are being scouted by the Anfield recruitment team.

United’s dilemma: interest with conditions

Manchester United’s involvement comes with a large asterisk. PSG have invited them into the bidding, but Old Trafford’s ability to act decisively is heavily conditioned by their own squad puzzle.

United are not currently in a position to simply throw €100m-plus at a left-sided forward. Any serious move for Barcola would hinge on offloading Marcus Rashford, whose long-held hope of a permanent switch to Barcelona has evaporated.

For now, United are preparing to reintegrate the 28-year-old England international into their plans. That reality makes a blockbuster outlay on another left-sided winger look unlikely unless there is a major twist in Rashford’s future.

So while United have been name-checked in PSG’s invitation list, Liverpool are the ones with a clear gap, a clear plan and, crucially, a player who is keen on the move.
