Benjamin Sesko's Journey: From Injury to Premier League Success

Benjamin Sesko leans back in his chair at Carrington and allows himself a rare word: “perfect.”

For months, nothing about his body felt close to that.

The Slovenian striker’s debut season in England was chopped up by a stubborn shin problem that refused to go away, cutting short his first campaign and wrecking his pre-season. Every time he looked ready to kick on, the pain came back. Every sprint carried a question mark.

Now, after an eye-catching return to the starting XI in the Champions League, Sesko believes that chapter is finally closed.

A long wait for the right moment

United’s medical staff took no risks. Sesko wanted to play; the club wanted him available for the long haul. Caution won.

“It was basically just to make sure that it doesn't get worse because this was kind of a problem,” he explained. “We just need a little bit longer than usual, because if you start too early, it might appear again. And I think waiting a little bit longer was a great decision, and now it's healed, so it's perfect. It was shin.”

This was not a freak twist or a one-off collision. The issue had been building, fed by the brutal rhythm of Premier League football and the demands he places on himself.

“I got a kick last season, but it was also a little bit of an overload from myself. So basically, that was it,” the 23-year-old said.

The timing hurt. His first year at Old Trafford had already been a blur of adaptation, yet he still found 12 goals amid the chaos. Just as he looked ready to push that total higher, his body hit the brakes.

From whirlwind to belonging

Away from the treatment room, Sesko was wrestling with a different kind of adjustment. New league. New language rhythms. New expectations. The step from the Bundesliga to the Premier League is big enough; doing it at Manchester United magnifies everything.

“Way better, especially than last season,” he said when asked how he feels now. “I changed a country. Everything was new for me. Now for me it's like I'm really enjoying it. I'm really happy here. I love life here. I have teammates that are perfect. I can't really complain about anything.”

The contrast with those early months is stark. Back then, every game felt like an audition. Now he talks like someone who has found his place in the dressing room and in the city.

A plan years in the making

United’s interest in Sesko is not new. Scouts had him circled when he was still a teenager, a 16-year-old prospect with the frame and movement that scream top-level striker. The club could have pushed harder then. Sesko could have jumped earlier.

He didn’t.

Instead, he and his camp mapped out a slower climb: Red Bull Salzburg, then Leipzig, then finally the Premier League. No shortcuts. No romantic leap from Slovenia or Austria straight into the glare of Old Trafford.

“It was just basically the moment that we decided because I think it was important,” he said. “It would be a little bit too huge of a step for me to jump from, let’s say, Austria or Slovenia directly to Manchester United. So I just needed those steps to get better and better and I’m finally here.”

That word again: finally.

The shin has healed. The city feels like home. The Champions League stage is his again. Now comes the real question for Manchester United’s No 9-in-waiting: with the excuses stripped away and the body right, how high can he push his game from here?
