Barcelona’s hunt for a new centre-forward has taken a significant hit. One of the names on Deco’s shortlist is gone – locked away in west London for the next decade.

Joao Pedro, long linked as a potential option for Barça as they prepare for the likely disappointment of missing out on Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, is no longer on the market. Chelsea made that crystal clear.

On Saturday, the club announced via their official channels that the Brazilian forward has signed a new contract running all the way to 2034, a statement of intent from the Premier League side that they have no interest in cashing in on one of their key attacking weapons.

For Barcelona, it removes a realistic target. For Chelsea, it rewards a player who has transformed from promising signing into central figure in rapid time.

Instant impact in blue

Joao Pedro arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2025. He did not ease himself in. He burst through the door.

He scored in both the semi-final and the final of the FIFA Club World Cup, dragging Chelsea to the global title. Two goals against his former club Fluminense sent the Blues into the showpiece, and he then found the net again against Paris Saint-Germain to help clinch the trophy.

That was only the beginning.

Across his first full season in 2025-2026, Joao Pedro hit 20 goals in all competitions. The numbers mattered, but so did the moments: the opener away at West Ham United to launch Chelsea’s league campaign, the solitary strike in a tight, statement win at Tottenham Hotspur. When Chelsea needed a breakthrough, he often supplied it.

Europe told the same story. He scored twice against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, underlining that his influence stretched well beyond domestic competition.

By the end of the season, the supporters had delivered their verdict. Joao Pedro was voted Chelsea’s Player of the Season for 2025-2026, a rapid ascent from new arrival to fan favourite.

“I always dreamed of playing for a big club”

The new deal reflects Chelsea’s faith, but also the player’s own conviction that he is in the right place.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea. I always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to commit to this club for the long term. Chelsea have a long history of victories, and have big ambitions for the future,” Joao Pedro said.

His connection with his surroundings has clearly helped.

“I have a very good relationship with everyone here at the club, and I have felt at home here in London from the moment I joined,” he added, underlining why the idea of a swift exit never really gathered pace.

The mood inside the camp matches his own optimism.

“Everyone is very excited for this season. We know we are capable of achieving many things, we have a great team, and we have a manager who wants to win and has won before. I am fully committed, everyone is ready, and we hope we can achieve our goals.”

Barcelona left to rethink

For Deco and Barcelona, the message is unambiguous: Joao Pedro is staying put. A player who ticked the boxes – age, profile, proven output at the highest level – has effectively been removed from the market until 2034.

As Chelsea double down on a forward who has already delivered on the biggest stages, Barcelona are forced back to the drawing board, still searching for the striker who can change the face of their attack.
