Barcelona's La Liga Title Defence: Rodri's Debut Delayed

Hansi Flick has drawn a clear line in the sand for Barcelona’s La Liga title defence: Rodri will have to wait.

The new signing, brought in from Manchester City in a deal that could reach 76.5 million euros, will not feature in Sunday’s opener away to Elche. The Spanish World Cup winner is the marquee addition to Barça’s midfield, but Flick is refusing to rush him.

“He’s very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team,” the coach told reporters on Saturday. “This is the plan. He’s a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great.”

The message is simple. Rodri is central to Flick’s project, but his competitive debut will likely have to wait until Thursday’s clash with Athletic Bilbao.

Striker search after Lewandowski exit

While the midfield looks stacked, the attack tells a different story.

With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres gone, Barcelona head into the new campaign still hunting for a centre-forward in the market. Flick kept his cards close to his chest over who will start up front at the Martínez Valero, but one name is forcing its way into the conversation.

Hamza Abdelkarim, just 18, has lit up pre-season with four goals in friendlies and has clearly caught his coach’s eye.

“Hamza is having a really great pre-season,” Flick said. “He’s a number nine, he’s young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you’re playing in this position, and he made a great job.”

The German did not confirm whether the Egyptian youngster will lead the line, yet the praise was pointed. In a squad suddenly light on orthodox strikers, a fearless teenager in form is hard to ignore.

False nines and fresh weapons

If Flick chooses not to throw Hamza straight into the fire, he still has options.

New arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, both natural wingers, can operate centrally as false nines. So can Raphinha and Dani Olmo, giving Barcelona a fluid, interchangeable front line rather than a classic target man.

It might not be the Lewandowski era anymore, but it could be a more unpredictable one.

Cancelo ready to go

At the back, there is less uncertainty. Joao Cancelo, signed this week, is available to play against Elche and looks set to bring his trademark aggression and quality on the ball to Flick’s system from day one.

“He’s ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion,” Flick added.

So Barcelona travel to the Martínez Valero with their new full-back ready, their record midfield signing held back for Bilbao, and a number nine position up for grabs. How long that vacancy lasts – and who seizes it – may define the early weeks of Flick’s reign.
