Barcelona Targets Cristian Romero Amid Financial Constraints

Barcelona have zeroed in on Cristian Romero. In a market full of moving parts and financial tightropes, the Tottenham centre-back has emerged as the defender Deco wants above all others.

According to Sport, the sporting director has pushed the Argentina international to the top of Barcelona’s defensive shortlist after shelving interest in Alessandro Bastoni. It is a clear shift: from admiring a luxury option at Inter to targeting a more attainable, battle‑hardened leader in north London.

A big target on a tight budget

There is a catch. Barcelona do not want this to be a blockbuster defensive signing. Their limited financial muscle remains pointed at the attack and at resolving the long-running Marcus Rashford saga. Any deal for Romero has to fit inside a strict framework, not blow it apart.

Even so, Hansi Flick’s staff have given the green light. If the numbers fall into a range the club can live with, they are ready to move. They see a centre-back who defends on the front foot, sets a tone, and thrives in one‑v‑one duels – exactly the kind of aggressive presence Flick wants anchoring his back line.

The problem sits 1,000 miles away in London.

Spurs’ survival fight changes everything

Tottenham’s league status threatens to reshape the entire negotiation. Spurs are still fighting to avoid relegation, with a final‑day trip to Everton looming large. That single result could swing Romero’s valuation.

Inside Barcelona, the belief is that Romero is prepared to leave regardless of whether Spurs stay up or go down. The expectation, per the report, is that he will depart this summer. The price, though, is a moving target.

If Tottenham remain in the Premier League, they are said to want at least €60 million. Barcelona have no intention of paying that figure outright. They are instead banking on the player’s desire to move, and on Tottenham’s wider situation, to drag the fee down. A player‑plus‑cash proposal is firmly on the table if that helps bridge the gap.

If Spurs drop, the equation changes again. Relegation would put pressure on wages, on contracts, on the entire squad structure. It could also open a window for Barcelona to strike at a lower cost than the current asking price.

Strained ties and an uneasy fanbase

Romero’s relationship with Tottenham is another key layer. The centre-back is currently in Argentina, recovering from a knee injury at the facilities of his former club Belgrano. He is not in England, not with the squad, at the most precarious point of Spurs’ season.

That decision has not gone down well in some corners of the fanbase. With the club fighting for their top-flight status, seeing one of their most important defenders rehabbing on another continent has only fuelled frustration and speculation. The sense that a parting of ways is coming grows stronger with each passing day he spends away from the relegation fight.

Barcelona are watching all of this closely. A strained relationship often precedes a transfer. It can also soften negotiating stances.

Flick’s ideal profile – and the Plan B list

From a footballing standpoint, Romero ticks almost every box for Flick. He is vocal, confrontational, and comfortable defending high. He relishes duels, leads a line, and brings a dose of edge that Barcelona’s back four has often lacked in recent seasons. In a system that demands defenders hold their nerve in open spaces, that matters.

Still, the club know they cannot gamble everything on one target. Roma’s Evan Ndicka remains under serious consideration as an alternative – a left‑footed option with Serie A pedigree and, crucially, a lower price bracket. Scouts have also been deployed to scour the Saudi Pro League for cheaper solutions, where clubs might be more open to deals that fit Barcelona’s current budgetary reality.

Romero, though, is the one Deco wants. The priority. The defender earmarked to lead a new cycle under Flick.

Tottenham’s fate at Everton, and Barcelona’s ability to bend a rigid budget without breaking it, will decide whether that ambition becomes the cornerstone of their defence or just another name on a long list of almost‑signings.
