When City needed control, they gave the ball to Rodri. When they needed calm, they looked for him.

His dominance stretched beyond club football. He lifted Euro 2024 with Spain and then capped that extraordinary year with the Ballon d’Or, confirmation of what many had argued for some time: that no midfielder on the planet dictated games quite like him.

Then came the setback. A serious knee injury cut through his 2024/25 campaign, a jarring pause in a career that had felt relentlessly upward. It has not, however, dulled the appetite of Europe’s giants to build their midfields around him.

Barcelona’s rejected bid feels like the opening act, not the end of the story. They know City’s valuation. City know the clock on his contract is ticking. Real Madrid, watching a long-time target drift towards their greatest rivals, will not enjoy sitting on the sidelines.
