Barcelona's Renewed Interest in Julian Alvarez

Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez, thought to be over when the summer window shut, is quietly flickering back to life.

According to El Chiringuito TV, the Atletico Madrid striker’s camp now believes the scenario at the Metropolitano could deteriorate as the season wears on, to the point where Atletico themselves might be forced to listen to Barcelona – or even initiate contact with the Catalan club.

That is a very different landscape to the one Barça faced just a few weeks ago.

From “closed case” to lingering saga

All summer, Atletico’s message was blunt: Alvarez was not leaving. Internally, they treated the matter as closed long before deadline day. The plan was simple – the Argentina international would stay, the noise around Barcelona would die down, and Diego Simeone’s squad would move on.

It has not played out that way.

The speculation has followed Alvarez into the season, hanging over him despite Atletico’s hardline stance. Barcelona’s move for Gabriel Jesus was supposed to draw a line under the story, at least publicly. They filled the No.9 vacancy, found their alternative, and stepped away from a battle they were not going to win on Atletico’s terms.

Yet the interest never truly disappeared. It just went quiet.

Atletico know it. Around the club there is an acceptance that Alvarez’s future, and Barcelona’s shadow in that conversation, could dominate headlines right through to January, whether the forward ultimately stays or pushes for a way out.

Barcelona’s door never fully closed

From Barcelona’s perspective, Alvarez has long been the chosen one for the centre-forward role. He was the preferred profile, the main name on the list. Failing to sign him in the summer did not change that evaluation; it only postponed it.

Barça’s decision to pivot to Gabriel Jesus was driven by timing and opportunity rather than a shift in sporting conviction. Jesus arrived, but Alvarez remained the ideal. That is why the possibility of a renewed push in January has never felt far-fetched inside the market.

Crucially, Barcelona are understood to have around €60 million of Financial Fair Play margin. That gives them room to consider at least one more major deal if the right opening appears. For a club constantly juggling numbers, that margin matters. It means they can be ready if the situation breaks their way.

A potential power shift in January

The key variable is Atletico’s position. During the summer, Barcelona were trying to prise away a player whose club had no intention of selling. Every conversation started and ended with a “no”.

If Alvarez’s camp is right and the atmosphere around him in Madrid becomes untenable, the balance of power could tilt. Instead of chasing a closed door, Barcelona might find Atletico knocking on theirs, or at least willing to sit at the table.

That flips the dynamic. Suddenly it is not just about Barça convincing Atletico; it is about Atletico managing a situation that could turn sour if the player grows restless or the noise becomes too loud to ignore.

New intermediaries with links to both clubs are also expected to move into the picture if the scenario develops. Their presence could help build a bridge that simply did not exist in the summer, when Atletico’s refusal left little room for negotiation.

For now, though, this is still a possibility, not a plan. There is no agreement, no formal talks, only a growing sense from Alvarez’s side that the status quo in Madrid might not hold.

If that cracks, Barcelona will be waiting.
