Barcelona Focus on Rodri and Julián Álvarez as Transfer Window Closes

Barcelona are not blinking. With a little over two weeks left in the summer window, the club remain locked on to two names and two names only: Rodri and Julián Álvarez. No contingency list. No plan B.

Club sources cited by Mundo Deportivo insist there is no internal debate about the strategy for these final days of the market. The hierarchy are convinced both operations can still be pushed over the line, even if each transfer sits at a very different stage.

Rodri: the priority deal

The Rodri move is the one Barça believe is closest. Their optimism leans heavily on one factor: the midfielder’s desire to join Hansi Flick’s project.

Rodri has already reported back to Manchester City after his summer break, yet in Barcelona there is a firm belief that his mind is open to a change of scenery. That conviction is driving a negotiation that still has serious financial hurdles.

City want a package worth around €80 million. Barcelona know their second bid fell short and are preparing an improved offer, but they are not expected to simply meet City’s valuation in full. Instead, the Catalan club are working on a structure that leans on bonuses and add-ons, pushing the total value towards €70m rather than paying the entire fee up front.

City have already rejected previous approaches and are waiting for that new proposal. For now, the Premier League champions hold the strongest hand, yet the player’s future is described as open, with Barcelona confident the next few days will be decisive.

Inside the club, the expectation — again according to Mundo Deportivo — is that the Rodri operation will either be completed or definitively clarified by next week. They want this saga resolved quickly, one way or the other, to give Flick clarity in midfield.

Julián Álvarez: a tougher battle

If Rodri is the deal they feel they can shape, Julián Álvarez is the one they are trying to prise open. The situation here is far more tangled.

Atletico Madrid have taken a hard line over the Argentine forward. Their stance has turned what Barcelona hoped might be a bold late-window swoop into a stubborn, grinding negotiation. The message from the Metropolitano has been consistent: this will not be easy.

Even so, in Barcelona they remain convinced Álvarez has not let go of his ambition to wear the Blaugrana shirt. At 26, the striker is expected to keep pressing for an exit in the coming days, searching for a path from Atletico to Camp Nou that currently looks blocked.

Álvarez has already tried to involve Diego Simeone in smoothing his departure, but that attempt has not produced the breakthrough he wanted. Simeone’s position, and Atletico’s, has stayed firm. The player’s intention, though, has not shifted either.

Right now, his leverage is Barcelona’s main hope. The club are effectively betting that Álvarez’s continued determination to move will, at some point, begin to reshape Atletico’s resistance or at least open the door to serious talks.

No plan B

What stands out is Barcelona’s refusal to scatter their focus. With the clock running, they are not actively exploring alternative profiles for either role. The message is clear: it’s Rodri for midfield, Álvarez for the attack, or nothing of similar scale.

It is a bold gamble in a market that rarely rewards hesitation. But if both players keep pushing from their side, and if Barcelona can find just enough financial room to manoeuvre, Flick’s squad could look very different by the time the window slams shut.
