Barcelona Targets Late Defensive Signing as Deco Pursues Left-Footed Centre-Back

Barcelona are heading into the final days of the transfer window with a packed agenda and very little margin for error. A striker remains the headline act, with Julian Alvarez still the dream signing, while deals for Rodri and Joao Cancelo are being pushed towards the finish line.

Behind that, though, Deco is working on something else. A final twist.

The sporting director wants a top-level, left-footed centre-back before the window shuts, if the numbers add up. It is not a whim. According to SPORT, he has been convinced for weeks that the squad needs this piece, even after internal debate questioned the timing and the cost.

Araujo exit reopens an old file

Deco already walked into the summer believing the defence needed a serious upgrade. That conviction took Barcelona to Alessandro Bastoni, a marquee option from Inter. The idea was clear: a high-end, left-footed defender to anchor the back line for years.

The move never got off the ground. There was no full sporting consensus in the club, and Inter’s valuation was deemed excessive. The file went back in the drawer.

Ronald Araujo’s departure has changed the landscape. Suddenly, what looked like a medium-term concern has become a live issue again. Barça have reopened the centre-back dossier and are back in the market.

Hansi Flick sees it differently. The German coach has never treated the position as a priority. He would gladly accept an upgrade, but his message has been consistent: the main push must be for a centre-forward.

He has reasons to feel calm. Pau Cubarsi is already playing with the poise of a veteran. Gerard Martin is another internal solution Flick trusts. Add Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia, plus academy defender Alvaro Cortes catching the eye, and the coach sees a back line with options.

The board sees something else. Experience. Security. Depth. From their point of view, one more seasoned centre-back, preferably left-footed, could lock the puzzle into place.

Laporte on the radar, Lukeba in the notebook

The profile is clear: a defender who can step in immediately, much like Inigo Martinez did when he arrived. Left-footed, experienced, and comfortable defending high up the pitch in Flick’s aggressive line.

Aymeric Laporte has moved to the forefront of that search. His camp had indicated that he has an affordable release clause, which encouraged Barcelona to run the numbers and test the waters.

On paper, Laporte ticks almost every box. He knows elite competition, is used to building from the back, and has already shared a back line with Cubarsi at the World Cup, where the pair delivered an outstanding performance. The chemistry is there, the style fits, the idea is tempting.

Then comes the obstacle. Athletic insist there is no such bargain clause and have no intention of sitting down to negotiate. For Barcelona, that turns a smart opportunity into a complicated, potentially expensive fight.

So the gaze shifts slightly, to a younger name: Castello Lukeba. The RB Leipzig defender has been under close surveillance from Barça scouts throughout the year. They like what they see – powerful, quick across the ground, strong in duels, and confident on the ball.

Lukeba would bring energy and upside, a signing for now and the future. The problem is obvious: price. Leipzig do not sell cheap, and landing him this summer would demand a major financial outlay at a time when every euro is being weighed.

Deco’s last swing at the market

For now, the centre-back question sits just behind the more urgent operations. Barcelona are pouring their efforts into the striker chase and into closing Rodri and Cancelo. Inside the club, those two deals are seen as very advanced.

Once that business is settled, the spotlight will move back to the defence. That is where Deco wants his final move to land: one last significant signing to complete the squad and give Flick a back line with both youthful promise and hardened experience.

Whether it is Laporte, Lukeba or another late-market opportunity, Barcelona’s summer may yet be defined by what happens in the heart of their defence.
