Barcelona Shifts Focus to Contract Renewals for Young Stars

Barcelona move from transfer market muscle to contract battles as Hansi Flick’s young core demands new terms.

From signings to safeguarding

With the window closed, Barcelona’s sporting management is turning inward, focusing on those who have earned their place under Flick and now need contracts to match their status. The pattern is clear: they are young, they have stepped up, and the club does not want to lose them.

At the front of that queue stands Hamza Abdelkarim.

The 18-year-old caught the eye in pre-season, operating as a classic centre-forward and convincing the coaching staff that he belongs in the long-term picture. Barcelona have already moved on him: a better salary, a higher release clause and an extra year added to his deal, which now runs until 2030. A clear message that his breakout summer was no accident.

Bernal’s promise triggers the clause review

Behind Abdelkarim, four more names are lined up for renewals, each at a different stage of their Barcelona journey.

Marc Bernal, 19, is already a familiar face to Flick. His contract currently stretches to 2029, but the numbers on it no longer reflect his importance. Talks over a pay rise are already underway.

The club had backed him during one of the most delicate moments of his young career. After his knee injury, Barcelona improved his deal and raised his release clause to 500 million euros, with a promise: if he delivered once he returned, they would come back to the table.

He did. Since recovering, Bernal has justified every bit of that faith, and now the club is acting on its word. Deco has already contacted his agent, Raul Verdu, to push the new agreement forward.

Martin next as Flick leans on his lieutenants

Gerard Martin, 24, is another player Flick trusts. He is tied down until 2028, with a release clause of 100 million euros, but Barcelona want more certainty.

The plan is straightforward: extend his stay, upgrade his salary and raise that clause. Martin knows exactly where the club stands and what they want from him. The feeling is mutual; this is about locking in a player who has already proved he can handle responsibility in Flick’s system.

Espart, Flick’s big bet, steps out of reserve status

Then comes Xavi Espart, 19 – described internally as Flick’s biggest gamble this season.

Espart arrived in 2025 on terms fitting a reserve-team player, his deal running until 2028. That status no longer fits. He now wears a first-team number and has climbed into the senior picture, which means his contract must follow.

His representative is the same agent who manages Ferran Torres, but Barcelona do not anticipate a drawn-out saga. The club expects the renewal to go through without friction, a natural adjustment to a player whose role has grown faster than his pay packet.

Farinas stays, Girona move shelved, future extended

The final name on the immediate renewal list is Bryan Farinas, 20. His situation nearly took a very different turn this summer.

Farinas, under contract until 2028, was close to joining Girona. Then Frenkie de Jong suffered an injury. Flick intervened, chose to keep the youngster, and handed him a first-team number. The coach’s decision changed the trajectory of Farinas’s season in an instant.

One thing didn’t change: his salary. He still earns on reserve-team terms, a figure that no longer reflects his place in the squad. Barcelona intend to fix that, with an improved contract expected to run until 2031.
