Barcelona's Alejandro Balde Faces Manchester United Move

Barcelona’s summer shake-up is gathering pace, and Alejandro Balde is the latest big name being nudged towards the door.

Ronald Araujo has gone. Ferran Torres too. Joao Cancelo is on his way in. Now, a homegrown full-back once seen as part of the club’s long-term core suddenly finds himself at the centre of the next major decision.

And Manchester United are circling.

According to MARCA, Jorge Mendes flew into Barcelona this week carrying concrete offers for both Balde and Marc Casado. The super-agent first sat down with the club’s sporting director, then presented scenarios directly to the players.

Casado’s exit has been on the cards for a while. Balde’s, far less so.

That changed the moment his name vanished from the squad list to face Elche. No injury, no rotation excuse that really stuck. Just a clean omission that rang alarm bells.

From that point, the picture sharpened. Balde now has three firm proposals on the table. Manchester United are described as the frontrunners, with two other clubs also pushing hard for the Spain international.

For all the noise, though, those close to the talks insist nothing will be signed off immediately. The final call on his future is expected to take a few more days.

Cancelo’s arrival squeezes Balde out

The key to all of this sits on the opposite side of the dressing room: Joao Cancelo.

The Portuguese defender is set to return and is widely expected to become Hansi Flick’s first-choice left-back this season. That changes everything for Balde. His route to consistent minutes, once clear, now looks badly congested.

Being left out against Elche only underlined the shift. When a young full-back goes from starter to spectator at this stage of the summer, it rarely feels like a tactical tweak. It feels like a message.

Right now, the odds of Balde staying at Barcelona look slim, even if the club and player have not completely shut the door on that possibility.

Barcelona’s next move

If Balde goes, Barcelona cannot simply stand still. They will need to act in the market.

The replacement does not have to be a like-for-like left-back. The club have long considered bringing in another centre-back, and that option is firmly back on the table.

A new central defender would free Gerard Martin to operate more regularly at left-back, giving Flick extra tactical flexibility and another way to manage the post-Balde landscape.

Barcelona started this summer expecting tweaks. They are now deep into a rebuild, with one of La Masia’s brightest recent products edging closer to a Premier League move and Old Trafford waiting to see if this is the moment they finally land a long-term solution on the left.
