Barcelona have named their five captains for the 2026-27 season – and the list says as much about the club’s internal hierarchy as it does about pure footballing stature.

Hansi Flick has ripped up part of the old script. Instead of leaving everything to a dressing-room vote, the coach personally installed Raphinha and Pedri as his primary leaders. Rodri, Barcelona’s marquee €76.5m (£65.3m) summer signing from Manchester City and fresh from lifting the World Cup as Spain’s captain, did not make the cut.

According to The Athletic, the players’ vote leans heavily on club seniority, not global reputation. Yamal has already clocked three seasons around the first team. That hasn’t stopped Rodri from taking charge where it counts most: on the pitch.

Given his first start against Valencia, the midfielder drew immediate praise from Flick. “We’re pleased to have Rodri in our team,” the German said afterwards. “You can also see everything he does with the ball, everything he does on the pitch. It makes sense. He gives the team structure in attack with the ball, but also without it.”

It was a neat summary of why Barcelona pushed so hard to sign him. He dictates tempo, he organises, he talks. Sometimes a little too honestly.

During that 5-0 demolition of Valencia, television cameras picked up Rodri on the bench turning to Pau Cubarsi and saying: “They’re really weak, they haven’t got past the halfway line.” A throwaway line between teammates suddenly became broadcast material.

The response told you more about him than the comment itself. Once he realised the exchange had gone public, Rodri picked up the phone and called Valencia captain Jose Gaya to apologise directly. He then issued a public statement after Barcelona’s Champions League win over Feyenoord, fronting up to the situation rather than hiding behind club PR.

No armband, but all the responsibility.

Inside the club, staff already see him as a key guide for 19-year-old defensive midfielder Marc Bernal. The two have begun to share the pitch, with Bernal coming on alongside the former City lynchpin in recent victories over Feyenoord and Levante. For a young pivot learning one of the most demanding roles in world football, there are few better reference points than the man widely regarded as the best in his position.

This is the nuance of Barcelona’s captaincy culture. The armband is often a reward for deep roots and institutional memory, not just star power or medals won elsewhere. On that front, Rodri is still the new arrival, still building those bonds in a squad packed with La Masia graduates and long-serving figures.

Yet his voice already carries. His career at the top level, his World Cup-winning status, his command of matches – all of it ensures he will remain one of the dominant personalities in a young, evolving dressing room, whether or not his name appears on the official leadership list.

Barcelona will lean heavily on that experience in the coming weeks. Flick’s side are staring at a brutal 12-day stretch next month: hostile trips to Galatasaray, Real Betis and Paris Saint-Germain, then a season-shaping El Clasico against Real Madrid at Camp Nou on October 25.

For Rodri, that final fixture comes with an extra edge. Madrid, then coached by Jose Mourinho, pushed hard for him earlier in his career. He chose the other side of the divide, the Catalan project, the Camp Nou stage.

Now the World Cup-winning midfielder walks into his first Clasico in blaugrana colours, not as captain, but as the man Barcelona will look to when the game starts to burn.
