Atsuki Ito Joins Bolton Wanderers from Gent

Atsuki Ito has ended his Gent spell to join Bolton Wanderers, becoming the first to make the jump from Belgium to the Championship amid talk that Max Dean could soon follow the same path.

The move closes a curious chapter in Ito’s career. He arrived at Gent in 2024 with real expectation after four productive seasons at Urawa Red Diamonds in the J League, where the central midfielder delivered 19 goals and 15 assists and built a reputation as a clever, technically sharp presence between the lines. On paper, he looked an ideal fit to replace Hyun-Seok Hong, one of Gent’s most influential departed midfielders.

It never quite unfolded that way.

Ito’s first year in Belgium was steady rather than spectacular. He featured heavily, playing 46 games in all competitions, but returned just two goals and a single assist. The output ticked upwards last season – five goals and three assists from 33 appearances – yet his minutes went the other way as his role slowly shrank under Rik De Mil.

The Gent head coach increasingly leaned on other options. Leandro Lopes, signed from Cercle Brugge, became the preferred choice at the base of midfield, often partnered by Matias Delorge when fit. Higher up, Abdelkahar Kadri carried the creative burden in the more advanced central role. Ito, capable of operating deep or further forward, floated between positions without ever truly owning one of them.

That lack of a defined place in De Mil’s plans has opened the door for Bolton. The Championship side are getting a versatile midfielder with a proven eye for goal from his Urawa days and two hard seasons of Belgian football behind him – experience that should steel him for the physical, relentless tempo of England’s second tier.

He leaves Gent as a player who showed flashes rather than the sustained influence many anticipated. Bolton now offer him the chance to turn those flashes back into the consistent form that once made him stand out in the J League.
