Atlético Madrid Aim for Title Fight at San Mamés

Atlético Madrid head to San Mamés on Saturday evening with the early-season swagger of a side that looks ready for a title fight.

Unbeaten, third in the table, and fresh from a statement win in Seville, Diego Simeone’s team walk into one of La Liga’s most hostile arenas knowing this is the kind of fixture that tests credentials as much as quality.

Atlético arrive with momentum

Three games, seven points, seven goals. Atlético have started the campaign with a sharp edge at both ends of the pitch.

Julián Álvarez, at the centre of a swirl of speculation over a possible move to Barcelona, is back in the matchday squad. Illness kept him out of recent sessions, but he has completed full training this week and is available. The saga is parked; now it is about what he can offer on the pitch.

Up front, though, there is a significant absence. Alexander Sørloth, Simeone’s primary centre-forward, remains sidelined as he recovers from a muscle injury picked up in mid-August. His physical presence and penalty-box threat will be missed, and Atlético will need to find different ways to hurt Athletic Club.

Midfielder Obed Vargas is also still out, trimming the options in the middle of the park.

There is fresh firepower on the other hand. Late-window loan signing Jonathan David has been named in the squad and could make his first La Liga appearance. His movement between the lines and ability to run in behind offer Simeone a very different profile to Sørloth, and San Mamés would be a fierce stage for a debut.

At the back, there is a straightforward call. Robin Le Normand has served his suspension and is expected to step straight back into the starting XI, restoring authority to the heart of the defence.
