Atlético Madrid Near Deal for Cristian Romero as Simeone Rebuilds Defense

Diego Simeone has asked for a leader at the back. Atlético Madrid are now on the verge of giving him one.

Talks to bring Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur to the Metropolitano have moved into their final stretch, with the Argentine defender pushing hard from his side and Atlético working to close a fee that stays below the 40 million euro mark.

Journalist Pedro Fullana revealed on “El Larguero” that the move comes at the direct request of Simeone, who has made the reinforcement of his defence a priority after a season in which Atlético lost much of the solidity that once defined them. An Argentine centre-back, in his prime, aggressive, front-foot, and already proven in Europe: Romero fits the profile almost too well.

Tottenham have not made it easy. Negotiations dragged on for weeks as the Premier League club held firm and Atlético probed for room to manoeuvre. Only in the last few hours has the operation accelerated, with all sides now working towards an agreement that could be sealed in the coming days.

Financial Plans

The numbers behind the push are clear.

Atlético plan to finance the move through a series of outgoing transfers. The club expects around 20 million euros from Nahuel Molina and another 20 million from Matteo Ruggeri. On top of that, Thiago Almada’s move to River Plate should bring in roughly 10 million. Those sales would effectively underwrite the Romero operation and allow Atlético to stay close to their financial plan while still backing Simeone in a key area of the pitch.

While the clubs haggle, Romero has already made his choice.

The defender wants to wear Atlético’s red and white next season and has acted accordingly. He has rejected every other offer on the table, holding his position and waiting for Tottenham and Atlético to find common ground. For Simeone, that kind of commitment matters. For Atlético’s dressing room, it sends a message before he has even stepped through the door.
