Aston Villa’s bruising opening day in the Premier League has left little room for debate: they need reinforcements, and quickly. Unai Emery’s side were torn apart by Brighton, and the response in the boardroom now has to match the reality on the pitch.

Villa look to Leão and rebuild from back to front

At the top of the wishlist sits Rafael Leão. The Milan winger has long been linked with a move to England, occasionally teasing Premier League interest without ever making the leap. Villa see him as a potential solution to their attacking bluntness – assuming they don’t pivot towards Nicolas Jackson or Jean-Philippe Mateta to spearhead the forward line instead.

The surgery won’t stop in the final third. Midfield looked worryingly flimsy in that heavy defeat to Brighton, and Rangers’ Nicolas Raskin has emerged as a candidate to bring some control and bite in the centre of the park.

Behind him, Villa are closing in on defensive cover. With Southampton resisting approaches for Taylor Harwood-Bellis, attention has turned to Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordóñez, who is now expected to come in and bolster Emery’s options at the back.

City circle Enzo as Chelsea eye a reshuffle

At Chelsea, the uncertainty around Enzo Fernández refuses to die down. Head coach Xabi Alonso has consistently stopped short of guaranteeing the Argentinian’s future, and Manchester City have clearly been paying attention. City are considering another move for the World Cup winner, sensing a potential opening in the stalemate.

Chelsea, aware of the risk, have been lining up contingencies. Alex Scott remains a key target as a midfield replacement, but time is slipping away. Bournemouth have already rejected three bids for the highly rated 20-year-old, and the London club may be forced to look elsewhere.

That alternative could be Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, who is on Chelsea’s radar as they explore ways to remodel a midfield that could lose its central figure.

Gakpo interest grows as Liverpool stall on reinforcements

City’s recruitment drive doesn’t end there. They have joined Tottenham in admiring Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, whose versatility and goal threat make him an attractive option. Yet without any attacking arrivals at Anfield, Liverpool are in no position to entertain offers. For now, the Dutchman looks locked in.

While outgoing business seems unlikely, incoming deals are proving just as tricky. Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has stalled, with negotiations failing to move at the pace the club would like.

Attention has turned to Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, who has been linked as a possible solution to a glaring gap in the middle of Andoni Iraola’s side. Liverpool’s engine room still feels incomplete; Camara would go some way to fixing that.

Championship grind pushes Sheffield United into the market

Drop down to the Championship and the picture is very different, but the needs are just as clear. Sheffield United have opened their campaign with back-to-back 0-0 draws, a solid base but a warning sign for Chris Wilder that his defence is walking a fine line.

Wilder has identified central defence as an area in need of reinforcement. Adam Webster, now a free agent after leaving Brighton, has emerged as a target. His experience and aerial presence appeal to a Blades side looking for steel and leadership at the back.

Wrexham spend big, West Ham wait on Brentford

Further down the pyramid, Wrexham continue to punch above their traditional financial weight. The Welsh club want to bring in Pavel Sulc from Lyon, with the French side valuing the player at around £10m. For a club of Wrexham’s stature, that figure underlines the ambition driving their project.

Their French scouting operation has been busy. Jacques Ekomié, the Angers left-back, is another name on their list. Yet that chase is already complicated: West Ham are also interested and could easily outmuscle Wrexham in any bidding war.

The Hammers are bracing themselves for movement elsewhere. With Brentford circling El Hadji Malick Diouf, West Ham are preparing for the possibility of having to react quickly in the market.

The window is shrinking. Needs are clear across the divisions. Now it’s about who moves decisively – and who hesitates just long enough to regret it.
