Aston Villa Signs Joao Gomes for £38m as Midfield Rebuild Accelerates

Aston Villa have struck again in the transfer market, sealing the £38m signing of Joao Gomes from Wolves as Unai Emery rips up and rebuilds the heart of his midfield.

The Brazil international arrives for an initial £34m, with a further £4m in add-ons, after Villa saw off strong interest from Atletico Madrid. The Spanish club had tracked the 25-year-old closely, but the deal swung decisively when Gomes left Wolves’ training camp in Portugal on Thursday to undergo a medical and finalise his move to Villa Park.

It is Villa’s second major midfield signing in the space of days. On Friday they wrapped up a club-record move worth more than £50m for Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi, beating Newcastle to the Switzerland international and underlining their intent to operate at the top end of the market.

The urgency is clear. Amadou Onana, a key figure in Emery’s engine room, is out until next year after suffering a serious knee injury with Belgium at the World Cup. Morgan Rogers is also heading for the exit, with Villa having agreed a £117m deal with Chelsea that will take another midfielder out of Emery’s options.

So Villa have moved aggressively, and Gomes fits the profile: energetic, combative, and proven in the Premier League.

He was one of Wolves’ most-used players last season, making 41 appearances in a campaign that ended in relegation as they finished bottom of the table. Across his time at Molineux, Gomes played 130 games and scored seven goals after joining from Flamengo in 2023, quickly establishing himself as a crowd favourite for his work-rate and bite in midfield.

Now he swaps a relegated side for a club with European ambitions and a manager renowned for reshaping teams around a dynamic core.

Wolves lose another asset. Villa gain a midfielder entering his prime, with Champions League-level aspirations, walking into a dressing room suddenly stacked with big fees and bigger expectations.

The question now is not whether Villa are serious, but how far this new-look midfield can carry them.
