Aston Villa Signs Ibrahim Mbaye for €55m

Aston Villa have struck an agreement in principle with Paris Saint-Germain to sign Ibrahim Mbaye in a €55m (£47m) deal, landing one of Europe’s most coveted teenagers just as their season threatens to unravel.

The 18-year-old winger is due to undergo a medical on Saturday before signing a five-year contract, with an option for a further year, and will arrive as a central piece of Villa’s attempted reset after a brutal opening day.

Villa pounce as rivals circle

Liverpool had tracked Mbaye all summer. Chelsea and RB Leipzig made late plays in recent days. Villa have cut through the noise.

The PSG academy product has already made 42 senior appearances for the French champions and is regarded as one of their brightest prospects. Now, barring any late twist in the medical or paperwork, he will swap Paris for Birmingham and step into a dressing room in need of a spark.

He will join Alejandro Garnacho, on loan from Chelsea, as a fresh wide option at Villa Park. Two new wingers, one clear message: Villa know they cannot afford another performance like last weekend.

A reaction to a disastrous start

Their Premier League campaign began with a thud. Brighton tore through them 4-0 in the opener, Joao Gomes saw red, and Villa sank straight to the bottom of the 2026-27 table.

The response from the board has been blunt. Spend, and spend on the future.

Mbaye’s arrival is designed not just to lift the mood, but to change the dynamic of Villa’s attack. A teenager with Champions League-level experience, walking into a side desperate for pace, invention and belief.

Liverpool walk away as price bites

While Villa pushed ahead, Liverpool stepped back. According to RMC Sport, PSG’s initial demands approached €70m, a figure that forced the Anfield hierarchy to cool their interest and move on.

Once the numbers climbed too high, Liverpool pivoted. Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh quickly rose to the top of their list, with the club seeing two bids – £50m and £60m – rejected.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has made it clear he wants Minteh to stay, yet he also knows how the market works.

“Rumours. Rumours,” Hurzeler said when asked about the winger’s future. “Let’s see what happens. Again, another example of a player who benefits from the success of the team.

“He benefits for example from hard work from Pascal [Gross], hard work from Jack Hinshelwood, hard work from all the other players.

“And he knows it. Therefore I also think it’s important to understand as a player what you have here, playing for a club like Brighton.

“You have a club that gives you the chance, you team-mates who are really trying to push you, you have a club that is there for you also in tough moments.

“[New Man United signing] Carlos Baleba had so many tough moments when he was here, Minteh also had tough moments, but we were always there for them, always tried to help them, their team-mates are there for them.

“So I think it’s also important for the players to understand what they have here with this club, how the fans are connected, how we are working together.

“It’s difficult to find a similar environment, or better environment, for potential young players. But the same with Minteh, we were successful as a team, that brings attention on him, so let’s see what happens.

“If you ask me if I’ll try to convince him to stay, yes I try to convince him to stay. But can I control everything? No, I can’t control everything.”

Minteh is currently sidelined with a leg injury but is open to joining Liverpool, who have also lodged an enquiry for Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr this week as they scour the market for wide reinforcements.

Villa’s gamble on the future

While Liverpool spread their net, Villa have chosen to go all-in on Mbaye. The fee, the contract length, the timing – all of it underlines how central they believe he can become.

An 18-year-old, a €55m price tag, a club already under pressure after one game. It is a bold move, and a clear statement.

If Mbaye settles quickly, Villa’s miserable start could fade into the background. If he struggles, the questions will come fast.

For a team already staring up from the foot of the table, this is the kind of gamble that can reshape a season – or define it.
