Aston Villa Target Leon Goretzka for Midfield Reinforcement

Aston Villa are closing on a statement midfield signing, with Germany international Leon Goretzka in advanced talks over a free transfer to Villa Park.

The 31-year-old is available after leaving Bayern Munich in the summer and has held positive discussions with the club as Unai Emery moves quickly to reinforce a squad that has been stripped of several key names.

Emery turns to serial winner

Watkins future still in the balance

Amid all of this, the uncertainty around Ollie Watkins refuses to go away.

Emery admitted on Friday that he cannot guarantee the England striker will stay beyond the transfer deadline, with Al-Hilal pushing to tempt him to Saudi Arabia.

“We have an issue with him, it's clear. He is our player. We have had offers for him," Emery said. "I don't want to sell him but it can change because if it's a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad, this is the routine we have and we did before with the players who are leaving.”
