Arsenal Ready to Strike for Julian Alvarez as Atletico Madrid Blocks Barcelona

Arsenal’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has moved from background noise to a genuine late-window storyline – and Fabrizio Romano is adamant it can’t be brushed aside.

The Atletico Madrid forward has spent the summer fixated on one destination: Barcelona. That stance has poisoned his relationship with Atletico and a large section of their supporters, with the club hierarchy now openly furious at how the saga has played out.

Atletico, though, have drawn a hard line. No Barcelona. Not now, not later.

Atletico slam the door on Barcelona

On Thursday, CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin went public with a blistering message that left no room for interpretation. He described feeling “outraged” and “repulsed” by what he called a lack of ethics, transparency and professionalism around the chase for Alvarez.

His vow was emphatic. Atletico, he said, will not negotiate with Barcelona “under any circumstances”.

“You have my word – the player [Alvarez] will most certainly not be transferred to Barcelona,” Gil Marin declared, stressing he had the backing of shareholders and directors. He then doubled down, stating that as long as he remains CEO, Barcelona can forget about signing Alvarez – not just in this window, but in the future as well.

That stance leaves the Argentina international boxed in. His dream move is blocked. His current club is furious. And the market is closing fast.

Arsenal wait in the shadows – but ready to strike

Into that vacuum steps Arsenal.

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, underlined that the London club are not just idly watching events unfold. “Arsenal are there for Julian Alvarez. Arsenal are there. Arsenal are waiting,” he said, insisting this is “a real strategy”, not a casual monitoring brief.

The dynamic is delicate. Arsenal, Romano explained, are staying in the background out of respect for Alvarez, his family and his agents. The player must decide. Arsenal cannot force the issue.

But while they wait, they work.

According to Romano, Arsenal have already told Atletico Madrid they are prepared to “make business” and try to reach an agreement. The finances, crucially, now stack up. The sale of Gabriel Martinelli – with a final fee expected somewhere between £50m and £60m – has created room to move for Alvarez on top of the money the club have generated in recent months.

“So Arsenal will be ready to sit at the table with Atletico Madrid and to reach an agreement,” Romano said. The only missing piece is the player’s green light.

With four or five days left in the window, that phone call could come at any moment. “If at any moment Julian Alvarez or his agent call Arsenal to tell them ‘okay we want to come because there is no other way’ Arsenal will be ready,” Romano stressed. “Get ready for this scenario because it’s not impossible. Arsenal are there for Julian and we have to follow the situation but this depends on the player.”

Alvarez’s stance vs reality

Up to “today, tonight, the recent hours”, as Romano put it, Alvarez has held firm: only Barcelona. “I want Barcelona, my dream is Barcelona.” Arsenal, meanwhile, simply keep their position and wait.

But Gil Marin’s public intervention has changed the temperature around the deal. The Atletico chief made it brutally clear: Barcelona is off the table for as long as he holds power. When asked about other clubs, his tone shifted. If Alvarez does not want to stay in Madrid, Atletico will not sell to Barcelona – but they are “open to finding a solution”.

The subtext is obvious. Romano translated it bluntly: “Guys, the message from Atletico Madrid is very clear: if Julian wants to go to Arsenal please go. You are free to go.”

Atletico would still prefer to keep him, to offer a “new chance to continue together”. But they also know that if Alvarez pushes to leave, Arsenal are waiting with money in hand and a clear interest.

So the entire saga now hangs on one decision.

Barcelona is blocked. Arsenal are ready. Atletico have drawn their line.
