Arsenal Set to Start Bruno Guimaraes Against Sunderland

Bruno Guimaraes is finally poised to step out of the shadows and into Arsenal’s Premier League XI on Saturday night – and he could not have picked a more hostile stage for it than the Stadium of Light.

Mikel Arteta has been cautious with the £75million summer signing, nursing him through niggling fitness issues and easing him from the bench. That patience now looks set to give way to opportunity.

Guimaraes impressed in a sharp cameo against Napoli in midweek and is understood to be in strong contention to start alongside Declan Rice. If Arteta follows through, it would be a significant tactical shift: Arsenal’s midfield gains an extra layer of control, bite and personality in a fixture that can turn frantic in a heartbeat.

His Newcastle United past guarantees he will be targeted from the stands. Sunderland will make sure of that. The noise will be unforgiving. But selection at this level is ruthless. Arteta will pick what he believes wins the game, not what quietens the crowd.

Midfield upgrade and attacking tweaks

The expectation is that Arsenal will not only change the engine room but also freshen up the front line after the 1-0 win in Naples.

Christos Tzolis and Kai Havertz are both in line to return to the starting XI after limited minutes in Europe, offering more thrust and height in the final third. On the left side of defence, Riccardo Calafiori is tipped to reclaim his place from Piero Hincapie, restoring a more natural balance at full-back.

Arteta’s rotation is not wholesale, but it is deliberate. Sunderland away on a Saturday night is rarely gentle. Arsenal want control of the ball and a harder edge without losing their fluency.

Defensive puzzle: fitness calls and one major absentee

At the back, the picture is more complicated.

Ben White is available despite limping off late against Napoli, a relief for Arteta as he juggles options on the right. Jurrien Timber and Cristhian Mosquera are both edging closer to involvement, adding depth just as the schedule begins to bite.

Timber, in particular, is pushing. After a long lay-off, he has rejoined full training and is under serious consideration for the squad.

Arteta said: "Let's see, we have another training session [on Friday]," and added, "He's been doing really well, he's been training with us now for a few days and he looks in good shape."

Mosquera is tracking just behind him in that recovery race. The manager’s message on the defender was similar, but with a slightly longer view.

"He's been doing really well," Arteta said, before adding, "Let's see if he can get this game or the next one. It will be around that time, I think."

One issue is non-negotiable. William Saliba will not feature. The Frenchman remains out for an extended period after aggravating a back problem on international duty earlier in the summer. Surgery has been avoided, but Arsenal must still cope without one of their defensive pillars.

How Arsenal could line up

Arteta is expected to stick with a 4-2-3-1 shape, with Guimaraes stepping into the double pivot and Havertz leading the line.
