Arsenal Signs Goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez in Summer Rebuild

Arsenal have moved again in a ruthless summer rebuild, landing Spain goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez on a free transfer as their sixth signing of the window.

The 27-year-old arrives from Real Madrid, where she became a symbol of the club’s rapid rise in the women’s game. She left at the end of last season with 215 appearances to her name – a club record – and the captain’s armband on her sleeve.

Rodriguez brings experience at the highest level. Since making her senior debut for Spain in 2021, she has collected 34 caps and was part of the squad that lifted the 2023 Women’s World Cup, starting three matches at the tournament.

She has since lost the national team’s number one spot to Barcelona’s Cata Coll, a shift that adds an edge to this move. Arsenal are getting a goalkeeper with something to prove, one who has already shown she can handle the scrutiny that comes with major finals and the demands of a superclub.

At Real Madrid, she stood in goal through the club’s formative years in women’s football, helping them establish themselves domestically and in Europe. Being handed the captaincy last year underlined her influence in the dressing room as well as on the pitch.

Arsenal will expect that authority to travel with her.
