Arsenal Signs Ezri Konsa as First Defensive Move of Summer

Arsenal have moved to strengthen the heart of their back line, sealing the signing of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa on a long-term contract.

The 28-year-old becomes the club’s first defensive arrival of the window, a deal confirmed on Arsenal’s official channels as Mikel Arteta looks to add experience and versatility to a squad again targeting major honours.

From Charlton prospect to Premier League mainstay

Konsa’s route to north London has been anything but overnight. He came through at Charlton Athletic, breaking into the first team in 2016 and quickly standing out as one of the brightest young defenders in the lower leagues. Two full seasons in the senior side were enough to attract serious attention.

Brentford made their move in 2018. One season in west London, packed with assured displays across the 2018–19 campaign, pushed his reputation up another level and put him firmly on the radar of Premier League clubs.

Aston Villa pounced in 2019. That transfer changed the course of his career.

Seven-season pillar at Villa Park

Across seven seasons at Villa Park, Konsa evolved from promising signing to defensive cornerstone. He amassed more than 200 appearances in all competitions, anchoring a side that climbed from survival scraps to European contention.

His consistency became his calling card. Week after week, he delivered. Just as important for modern managers, he proved equally comfortable at centre-back and right-back, a dual role that helped establish him as one of the division’s most reliable defenders.

That blend of reliability, athleticism and positional intelligence is exactly what Arsenal believe can raise their defensive ceiling.

England regular joins Arsenal’s core

Konsa’s rise has mirrored his club progress on the international stage. He represented England at Under-20 and Under-21 level before finally breaking into the senior squad in 2023. Once in, he stayed there.

Since that debut, he has become a regular option for the Three Lions, featuring at Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup and proving he can handle the pressure of tournament football.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta underlined why the club pushed to get the deal done.

“We are delighted to complete the signing of Ezri Konsa. He is a defender of high quality, and his physical attributes, composure and tactical intelligence have made him one of the most consistent players at this level in the Premier League,” Berta said.

“Thanks to his ability to play at centre-back and right-back, Ezri will give our team important flexibility, while maintaining the high defensive standards that are a key element in our pursuit of major honours.”

Berta stressed the broader package Arsenal believe they have secured.

Konsa will wear the number 15 shirt at Arsenal and is set to link up with his new team-mates in the capital immediately.
