Arsenal Sign Liverpool Starlet Vincent Joseph

Arsenal are set to prise one of Liverpool’s brightest young forwards out of Anfield, with an agreement in place for England youth international Vincent Joseph to join the Premier League champions.

The Athletic reports that Arsenal have reached an agreement with the 16-year-old striker, leaving the two clubs haggling over the compensation fee that will seal the deal.

Champions keep pushing

Mikel Arteta’s side may be heading into the new season as defending Premier League champions, but they are clearly not easing off. The first team has been backed, the infrastructure has been backed, and now the academy is being sharpened again.

This time, the upgrade comes from a direct rival.

Joseph, a highly rated forward in Liverpool’s system, has already made his mark on the international stage. He has eight goals in nine appearances for England’s under-16s and has featured for Liverpool’s under-18s in the Premier League. For a teenager still finding his physical ceiling, that is a serious return.

He chose not to sign scholarship terms at Anfield this summer after his schoolboy registration expired. That decision opened the door. Arsenal walked straight through it.

Liverpool rebuild while losing a prospect

Liverpool, under new boss Andoni Iraola, have been busy reshaping their squad as they chase down Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

The Reds have already brought in Spanish winger Victor Munoz and young French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, and they are exploring a move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. It is a clear attempt to refresh a squad that slipped behind Arsenal last season.

At the same time, though, they are on the verge of losing one of their most promising academy forwards to the very club they are trying to catch.

Tribunal looms if clubs can’t agree

While Arsenal and Joseph have an agreement, the move is not fully done yet. The sticking point is compensation.

Because Joseph is 16 and has not yet signed a professional contract, the deal falls under the rules for players under 24 moving before their first pro deal or after one expires. If Arsenal and Liverpool cannot agree a fee, the case will go before the Professional Football Compensation Committee.

That panel would set the amount Liverpool receive, weighing up Joseph’s age, his playing record, the time he has spent in Liverpool’s system, the status of both clubs, and the offers each club put to the player.

It is a familiar process in English football, but the context here is anything but routine: the champions moving decisively to take a gifted young striker from a direct rival, while that rival tries to rebuild and close the gap.

For Joseph, the next step is clear. The question is how high Arsenal believe he can climb in a club that has just proven it knows how to turn potential into a title-winning squad.
